    great idea imo

yes there will be loopholes and ways round it, but some benefit claimants already waste taxpayer money on fags, booze and drugs, this would just make things harder.

It would also reduce the appeal to those considering life on benefits.

of course, for those that do not abuse the system, such a change would make no difference to their circumstances

    Sounds good to me.

Might be easier just to subcontract supermarkets to deliver a box of food every week, there can be different 'menus' to suit different tastes and of course different amounts due to number of kids etc.

So take the children away from them if necessary. I'd rather pay taxes to have those kids looked after properly than to subsidise the lazy, f e c kless, workshy, self-indulgent, irresponsible dross that drag up their kids to turn out exactly like them.

Provide more jobs for criminals to look after them (as per care homes) and stack up more abuse cases for the state to be "vicariously" claimed against.

the idea is flawed and doomed to failure and /or greater expense to the tax payer. The only thing it might save is some money transmission costs but it will no doubt be the straw for the camels back of the new (IDS) Benefits IT system. No doubt testing is still going to schedule;)

One minor point that is oft being overlooked in the abstracts above....

People are asking about what genuine and good benefit claiments will do with vouchers, and wanting plonk on special occasions.

Genuine benefit claiments wont be on the voucher scheme, its the trouble families that will be.

Ethnic cleansing is too good for them.

So if all care home workers are "criminals" what should we do ? Wind up all the care homes and put the kids on the streets to fend for themselves ?

If that's the best argument against IDS's idea then he must be getting it right.

Just being topical based on the current stories in the news I do not think all are criminals and didn't suggest that..

IDS is p*****g in the wind until long term strategies to provide alternative income sources are provided or cut down spiraling costs such as housing.

All they are doing is shuffling the cost leaving those affected to be picked up by the voluntary sector (which will end up funded by government) or a benefit called something else.

Will create a large number of non-jobs in the public sector processing this pointless system, and the obvious restriction on trade driving local small shops under.

    Win Win !.

The obvious problem with this is whether it also targets non problem families too.

A prepay card is only going to be accepted at places set up to accept it, i.e. larger retailers. So those on a limited budget who take advantage of markets or cheaper local shops will be forced to buy less at tesco.

Great for tesco etc not so good for those in need.

There is an easy solution, get a job and pay your own way.
