  • Very lucky to live a 5-10 min walk from work. Not so fortunate when it snows and no-one else can get in though, I have no excuse!

If I'm on an early, I have to get the bus home which is £4.20 (2 buses) if I'm on nights I have to get the bus in which is £2.50 (1 bus) reason for the difference is that there is only one bus an hour from the stop which is 15 minutes walk from work, and I finish just after it comes so 9 times out of 10 I cant be bothered to wait an hour for the next one :p so I get a bus into the town centre where I can pick up another bus.
OH drops me off if I'm on an early, picks me up in the morning if I'm on nights and drops off and picks up if I'm on lates. On a bad month it can end up costing me about £40 but on a normal month usually about £20-30.
Before I got this job it used to cost me £300 a month - a monthly rail ticket and a monthly bus pass

£96/month for an Annual All Zones Trio Pass, bought through an interest free loan from work.

The Pass covers the whole of Merseyside for bus/ferry & train and means I can get to Anfield, to follow my beloved LFC, for nowt.

£400 a month but that is with me walking to and from the station but would be an extra £100 if I were to drive to the station.

Saying that, their car park is almost just one very long line of cars, given I am not an early bird then my walk would probably be just as far as from home just from the other end of the car park instead

To travel 15 miles I pay £139.10 a month (will go up by £10 at least in Jan wage to go up by £3 in March :( )

That's a bus and train. Even in the snow I'm still expected to get in

£278 per month for a season ticket to London on the train. It doesn't include the tube as I walk the 15 mins from the station to the office and back again.

Would say though people are probably more likely to post on here if they spend large amounts on commuting. For balance in my first professional job I spent nothing apart from the £300 cost of a bike -it was only a couple of miles.

In my second job it was about £5 a day for the train.

Obviously the more you get paid the more paying a lot for commuting makes sense.

I'm in the sticks so no alternative to a car.

In my Audi 2.6 days, my costs were approx £40 - 45 per week in fuel. However, saw the error of my ways and traded the Audi in for a Ford and my costs are now approx £12 per week in fuel. Still saddens me though :-(

Anything extra to my daily commute I receive 45ppm - I believe HMRC based this rate on petrol being about 90p per litre (haha!).

Where I live, the government have a tax saver scheme for public transport.

This means that you buy an annual ticket for either bus, rail, tram or all three, and the cost is reduced by the amount of your payroll tax.

    It's brilliant!

Taxes are kind of high though, so if you are say paying a tax rate of eg 35% including social security, your annual ticket is reduced by this amount. And the higher tax you pay, the more the reduction.

My weekly transport cost for unlimited use of bus and tram is 10 sterling equivalent.
  • I cycle, cost me £20 a month for 12 months as a commuter loan from my salary. All paid now, and I have a nice bike and am able to appreciate the outdoors on my way to work.
