I'm a trade plate driver, so I've got a vehicle in the yard every morning and I bring one home every night.

Getting between jobs in the day is the challenge. I aim to spend no more than 15% of what I'm earning that week on transport.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?
Get jobs in offices and wake up for the morning commute?

About £6.00 a week in petrol, and free parking.

TBH, having spent hours commuting by train in my previous jobs, or driving for miles paying extortionate parking fees (or usually taking the park and ride) it's one of the real perks of the job. The time that I 'save' now and have to myself is also a big bonus, I'm home hours earlier than I used to be. It's something I'll definitely take into consideration when looking at other jobs.

Maybe a better question would be what percentage of your pre tax income goes on transport.

Depending on the job I work on it's usually travelling zone 3-1, so both ways it's £6.20. But sometimes if I work late or walk some of the way it can be less.

So maximum 8% of my usual income goes on transport. Or if I got a travel card it's a bit more as I travel on weekends as well.

Never worked in out but maybe £30 for work.

I'm a security guard and can get a call to go to a site miles away so it can mount up.

I work from home so technically nothing but I have a company car and I pay 40% tax on about £8k as I also get a fuel card so while I don't pay out I am paying indirectly whether I use the car or not.

In one job I only work a 10 minute walk away from home, but I usually cycle as it's easier.

In the other jobs I'm a temp, so I either cycle or (if it's too far i.e. anything over about 6 or 7 miles each way) I ask for travel expenses from the agency and invariably get them.

£85 a month. For that, I take the more pleasant journey of bus and train. I could get the price down to about £60 a month, but the journey is hell, so I'm happy to pay a bit extra.

    Hi

I work 3 days a week and spend £9.00 travelling by bus or DLR.

  • My travel currently costs approximately £15 per day in petrol...if you factor in car maintenance, insurance etc the proper cost is probably around £25 a day. Plus approximately 2 to 2.5 hours of my time. (thankfully most weeks I can work from home a day or two so it averages out a bit better over the week).

My partner commutes from outside the M25 into central London each day and his train ticket costs well over £4000 per year and he spends a similar amount of time travelling.

I've recently accepted a new job that means moving but we will both have much improved commutes (reduced to about an hour a day each and costs less than half of current)...I can't wait!!
Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!
