OP: you might need to top up the inhibitor in your system after all your recent boiler/central heating related activities. Lots of advice here.

Someone suggested a flush of the system. I'd be apprehensive about flushing a system where the radiators contain so much hydrogen that the OP has come on in a panic. There's a good chance of pin hole leaks if those rads are in bad shape. In older systems it's the rust and sludge keeping the water in!

I'd ring Transco myself, at the 1st hint of a gas smell. They're the only ones who can make sure of what it is and where it's coming from.
Except I think it's changed from Transco to summat else now?..

hopefully you have read the thread & not just looked at the pictures, national grid aren't the only ones any RGI should be able to do the same
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

...except it's not a gas smell. Have you never bled a radiator?

At no point has OP said he can smell gas ie the stuff that makes the boiler go round. Natural Gas has a very distinctive smell (actually it doesn't its odourless - its the additives that give it that smell). Please explain how this commodity might have got into his water pipes? The air in the EV will niff a bit its been stuck in there for a while. Any air (because its not necessarily just hydrogen) thats in the system and comes out when the bleed valve is opened will also smell for the same reason and its also been mixing with dirty water, hydrogen, inhibitor etc.

Whilst amusing the Boom cartoon wasn't helpful as the OP was panicing.

As you rightly surmise you can ring Transco to the cows come home. Nobody will answer as Transco any more.

    Cheers

  • yes try it & see you prob won't have 0.75 bar in the ev but you will have some & you will prob have to top up the pressure due to air in the system, if i see you on the six oclock news doing a superman impression then we know it really was gas you could smell (only joshing) :D

Thanks and yes you are right...before turning on my boiler I did check the EV pressure and it was 0...

I just topped up water pressure and checked couple of radiators that when I try to bleed water comes immediately...I didn't smell the water coming out of the radiator this time...but water from hot water taps seems all right...

Good news noting went horribly wrong when I went turned on boiler and heating (though I feel like all of my radiators are more warm on top side than bottom but it must be normal).

Because EV pressure is still 0 I think my water pressure go back to 0 when I turn off the heating but this time I don't want to hit any panic button as I did yesterday and will ask registered plumber to repressurise EV...

Massive thank you to all you guys...
  • How much will it cost if I ask some plumber to come around and repressurise EV?

I'd say, whenever you smell gas, call the gas company, even though you shouldn't smell gas relating to the water at all.

Sorry if that's too simple a response.

And that's an example of just how far of the mark an answer can get.

Did you also know that natural gas doesn't actually smell, they add that just so it's detectable by nose;)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
