Urgent: Gas sort of smell when I bleed my radiator???

Hello,

I was having a problem that when I turn on my central heating water pressure was falling to 0 bar and in other forum I was suggested i need to repressuries my EV?

This morning I repressuries EV to 0.75 bar and when I did that water pressure was at 0 bar (it was suggested in that forum.)

When I was taking the foot pump lead out of EV valve i smelled slight gas but couldn't smell anything after that....

Also, water pressure automatically reached to 1 bar without re-filling it after that.

Now when I bleed my radiator water comes out immediately but it smells like gas well...

I'm really worried and I haven't turned on my boiler yet...

Is that normal or something has gone wrong and I should call plumber before turning on the boiler? Should I switch off the electricity in the house as well?

It's pretty urgent please reply me asap. Thank you.

  • I'd say, whenever you smell gas, call the gas company, even though you shouldn't smell gas relating to the water at all.

Sorry if that's too simple a response.

The smell you are getting is quite normal from radiators, its Hydrogen which is created by the boiler heating the water in a sealed unit - and corrosion from your radiators, basically the H in H2o.

Nothing to worry about at all.

You could do with getting your radiators flushed through though to get rid of the muck that has accumulated, then refill and add some inhibitor, this will help.

  • if the pressure gauge showed 1 bar after you re-pressurised the EV then you did it incorrectly & you prob won't have 0.75bar in the EV, i did try to explain in the other thread that you need to have the boiler prv or heating system valve/drain off open when you re-pressurise, think of a ballon & your hands as water you can blow up a ballon normally as it just displaces the air around it but use both hands & keep the ballon flat you can't blow it up, when you re-pressurise the EV it will displace any water that is in there & this needs to go somewhere ie out of the prv or the heating drain off
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

As Muckybutt says, it's quite normal, don't worry about it.

Thanks but now I did something wrong...what should I do...I'm really scared..Is it really gas which has gone in to the radiators?..Is it health risk? Is it going to damage boiler?

I bleeded the radiator so water pressure bas goes to 0...then refilled it and try to bleed but it still smells weird (may be gas)..what should I do now?

I'm really sorry for asking too many questions but I'm bit panic now...

Have you read my post ? #3

It is nothing to worry about, its gas yes but not house gas - stop fretting.

Thanks and I was slightly relief when I read your response but bit concerned because water didn't smell when I bleeded radiator about 4-5 days before...today I repressuries the EV (didn't follow the instructions correctly) and now I'm getting this weird smell out of the radiator water.. at one stage I was literally cursing my self :(
  • like MB said don't worry, when most people bleed their rads it's not air they are getting out it's hydrogen gas due to the rads rusting & creating the sludge/black mucky water that most heating systems have if not maintained correctly

Phew...now i can turn on my boiler :-)

Do i need to do anything for the mistaks i did while repressring the ev? I did not turn off the vales under the boiler nor did i keep prv valve open...basically i just check water pressuer is zero and pumped air..should i do anything or just turn on boiler and worryg about it if water pressure goes 0?
  • yes try it & see you prob won't have 0.75 bar in the ev but you will have some & you will prob have to top up the pressure due to air in the system, if i see you on the six oclock news doing a superman impression then we know it really was gas you could smell (only joshing) :D
