I have tried, but they keep throwing the ball back in my court and say talk to your mum about it yourself. They will not advise if they think she would be safe at home.
I don't understand why they are passing the buck, yes you can talk to your mum till the cows come home, but surely the hospital as health proffesionals could advise you based on an assesment of her needs, sometimes we need an outside voice to advise on things especially when its about a matter of safety, have you tried to talk to someone higher in the hospital? I don't know whether this would help but it couldn't be any worse ......:o

I do feel for you Lindos. My mum looked after my gran for 14 years when my gran moved in with her.
My gran had always said that she hoped she "wouldn't end up in one of those places" and I know my mum felt dreadful when the time came that she could no longer care for her mum but she'd started having mini strokes and falls.

It got to the stage where I would have to go and sit with my gran for my mum to go anywhere as gran didn't want to be left alone.

It meant that my mum hardly had any life of her own, and although my gran was a darling, she became more and more demanding, but not through any fault of her own.

She had a particularly bad turn, at which point the doctor and district nurse both said that it would be best all round if gran went into residential care.
At this point I honestly think my gran was relieved that someone in authority had suggested this.
She'd been frightened of hurting my mums feelings every bit as much as mum had been frightened of upsetting gran!!

Maybe your mum could try it on a daytime basis for a couple of weeks, or just a couple of days a week to break her in gently and to give you a bit of a breather.

Gran obviously would have preferred to be living at home, but by the same token, she was a lot less anxious in the home, knowing that medical help was at hand, and she made friends with other residents, and loved all the gossip....especially when two of them got married in their 90's
My husband says he will leave me if I don't stop shopping......... God I will miss that man.

hi my heart goes out to you as i work in a care home as much as you love your mum you also need your own space and more than anything looking after you family is number one i understand how hard it must be to broach the subject and how bad you must feel as of course its your mum in my opinion you should suggest respite which usually consists of a two week period and looking round different care homes tell your mum how worried you are about her but allow her to to chose the place she feels happy with asides that there is carers that can go in and assist at home dont forget it means your mum giving up everything she has known for her whole life :)
I worked in a care home and found my co-workers to be commited, dedicated, compassionate and, well, caring. Don't have any misgivings about the day which may well come when I have to make use of one myself.:)

Hi, just incase anyone has run out of cereal yet (there may be someone!) there is a 50p coupon off Crunchy nut cranberry and almond, via facebook. It is on the coupon thread, haven't seen it mentioned here.
