but when you tell them that you no longer want their services because you switched to another host 7 months before thecontract ended and they say well if you pay us £xx then we can think about cancelling the contract afterwards.. yea right
Then they threaten you with debt collectors when you don't pay for a service you are no longer using or want

Debt collectors. Just tell them you are disputing the charge with the retailer and they will pass it back.

They arn't bad prices for web hosting depending what you get for it. I paid £24 for a year, though the site is very small.Do you want your money back, and a bit more, search for 'money claim online' - They don't like it up 'em Captain Mainwaring0

I recently had problems with this company too. Basically it is a scam designed to trap the unwary. I believe they would be hard pressed to prove otherwise under English Law... they sign you up with a great introductory rate (can't remember but something like £10) and then hit you with a disproportionate fee two years later. If, like (I assume) most people, you don't carefully read and understand the T&C's before clicking "I agree" and pay very close attention then you will be in for a nasty shock two years later when you have forgotten all about it.
I moved away form the UK and so didn't become aware of my debt until finally got tracked down by a debt collection agency sending me nasty emails. After putting them off for some time I took some legal advice. It seems to have worked but I still haven't heard back form them confirming the case is closed, however I've stopped receiving the regular "pay us now or else" email from them. I suppose this may be too late for you Joolsnkilly but I hope it will help others beat these bullies.
Below is some text for a letter I have sent them... I offer this for your peace of mind and support. Please bear in mind though that I take no responsibility for any consequences.
"Dear Sirs,
Having taken legal advice I consider that this contract is subject to the terms of the Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977 and the Consumer Contracts Regulations 1999.
As you will be aware Schedule 2 paragraph 1 makes reference to contracts irrevocably binding the consumer to terms with which he had no real opportunity of becoming acquainted before the conclusion of the contract.
Additionally the contra proferentem rule indicates that a contractual term which has not been individually negotiated shall be regarded as unfair if contrary to the requirement of good faith it causes significant imbalance in the parties' rights and obligations arising under the contract to the detriment of the consumer.
By burying charges massively higher than I was made aware of I consider and am advised that these terms are inconscionable and unenforceable. Good faith required that these terms be made known to me in the clearest terms at the time so that there was clear pricing.
Please confirm accordingly that you are dropping the matter with immediate effect failing which I will make a formal complaint both to the Office of Fair Trading and the trading standards section of the local Council."
So... give that a whirl and see how it works.... I do of course suggest that everyone registers a complaint with the OFT and the local councils so we can bring these rotten little ****s to their knees. I certainly would rather sink more money into causing Streamline trouble than just paying into their scam.

So you disappear from the country without first tidying up you obligations and blame everyone else.
Auto renewal is perfectly legal and can also be very convenient to stop interruption of service or lapse of insurance.
The problem is lazyness, the op in this case didn't even read his emails and yet blames everyone else, and you leave the country but it's not your fault they should have magically known this and automatically canceled your services right?
Like anything else auto renewal needs your attention as to whether or not you want to continue with it, leaving it until you are hit with the bill is your fault not theirs.0 -

If you clicked the "I agree" button without fully reading and understanding what you were agreeing to then that makes you rather stupid doesn't it.
There are numerous threads on this forum from people complaining about being "scammed" in one way or another and in a lot of cases it is purely down to their stupidity/layzness in not reading the T&Cs that they were agreeing to.
They then go on to complain about how it is everyone else's fault but their own.0 -
Auto-renewals are excellent, until you forget about them and blame everybody else. I wonder how many people claim monthly rolling contracts with phone companies unlawful? These are after all monthly auto-renew things. Not many I suspect.0

The problem, as demonstrated in this thread, is lazyness and stupidity. If you actually aren't too lazy or daft to keep an eye on what you're signed up to, auto renewals are great.

Your reply June 2013 I agree about reviewing t&cs but suggest you take the time to review streamline. Their practices are disgraceful and definitely unlawful. Would suggest you do some google research on this despicable company before trashing the OP out of hand
Streamline think they can operate outside the law and it's time they were stopped.0
