I drive a 530D. A fabulous car, I love driving it and do a fair amount of motorway miles.

Over the last 11 days I have driven Bristol to Edinburgh. Edinburgh to Bristol, Bristol to Manchester, Manchester to Bristol, Bristol to plymouth and back again.
This should car is absolutely designed for this style of driving. Even after my long trips I don't want the drive to end.

You need some diy skills, an oil change costs me about 80.
Swirl flaps need to go, thermostats will need changing, glowplug errors to correct, all routine and common issues.

If you don't do the kind if driving I do, consider dpf problems (1,200 fix)
A new turbo will be 1,500

If you spend all your money on the purchase, you will always be frightened of that big repair bill.

Tyres are run flats so costly too.

Expensive motoring but worth every penny. It belongs on the motorway, heavy but remarkably fast which simply doesn't belong pootling around town, around town you are well in the low 20's mpg.

Someone who actually knows what they're talking about.

You should get shot of those run-flats ASAP apples though.

Yeah, we've decided that we want something high end, we've worked hard (or my husband has) and we settled on the car being a BMW.

Also remember BMW do an SE & M-sport versions with M-sport representing sports body kit and shouldn't ever get mixed up with a proper BMW M car.

Ok, i know i'm late to this particular show, but I got my first BMW back in April, 8K got me an 06 320D SE with 50K miles on the clock. I can honestly say I've never loved a car more. I take very good care of it, and in return it gives me 52.3mpg avg. Cruise control is a god send as well.

Its not an estate, but it handles so elegantly and sticks to the road like glue :)

The only downside for me personally is that there is a really, really annoying rattle between 1000 and 1500rpm from (what I believe to be) inside the engine bay behind the steering wheel. havent found it yet because it doesnt rattle at idle.

Trying to wear all four down together before I ditch and switch. Can't wait.
  • Weeeeelll, Just a little update.

After much discussion, the husband thinks we should have a car each. He pointed out several reasons why this would be better, but in actual fact, the main reason he wants to get a car each is so that it means he can by a 'chav car'. Impretza, Evo kinda thing. Which I HATE!!

But he's said that i means I can have the car i've always wanted...a Fiat 500!!

I'm really giddy at the prospect to be honest! My test is in 2 weeks, then I think it'll take 6-9 months to clear the last of our debts. This will give me a chance to drive our Vectra and get used to solo driving before getting a new car of my own.

Thanks for all the info though!
  • Not very MSE then! Good luck with your test

Having 2 will generally work out more expensive but if you're willing to pay that little bit more for the practicality of having 2 cars then that's fair enough. Something like the 500 will be better for doing short town journeys in anyway, a newish diesel bmw is asking for trouble with that kind of usage.

You should buy 3 series. because 5 series is really ,more expensive than 3 series.

    Why even bother posting?
