Why bother with diesel? My boss runs a 56 plate 535d and it does similar MPG to his previous shape 545i ..

The diesel comes with all the usual rubbish that will fail at some point.

    Nah.

The pre LCI (prior to march 2007) 535d averages about 33mpg, and the post LCI car manages about 37mpg.

A 545i is mid 20's at best. Certainly wont break 30mpg on average.

Plus the 535d has oodles of torque and is easy to remap.

Depends what you mean by "driver's car". If you mean handling, you've never driven an S4. If you mean speed, it doesn't really matter any more there's cameras everywhere and all modern diesels are about the same. If you mean comfort, it's run of the mill. If you mean the level of trim, it's bland. If you mean ergonomics, it's lacking. If you mean it's got rear wheel drive, then yes, it's better than a Merc, but then so are most things.

As an overall package in the mid-sized rep-mobile class. I'd rather have a Mazda 6, an Audi A4, a Volvo V70, a Ford Mondeo, or a Hyundai i40 (don't knock em til you've tried em).

Sorry, but you're way off the mark here.

Firstly, the 5 series is an a6 rival not an a4 / s4 rival.

Secondly comparing a top end performance a4 (the s4) to a boggo 5 series is not comparing apples with apples.

Any 3 series is better than its a4 counterpart. And Merc C class for that matter.

Any 5 series is better than its equivalent a6 / e class.

    OK you're right. :T
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?
Get jobs in offices and wake up for the morning commute?

Not just me - the majority of exec buying drivers buy a BMW, motoring magazines almost unanimously rate them better against direct rivals, etc, etc.

That's OK. I told you you're right, BMW drivers always are.

My focus was the three litre engine, try to find a bad review of it... Everything else in that class of car is compared to it.

A three litre engine in a focus! I think you are talking billy bollox! I can't find any review of it, good or bad as it doesn't exist.

They mean the focus of their comment was the 3.0 engine. Not a Ford Focus with a 3.0..

Bear in mind the recently discovered security flaws of push-button start BMWs:
