Confused.. How to work out what our line should be capable of & limit we could manage

Can anyone help in plain English before I start calling ISP's & get them telling me stuff just to get me to hook up?
I need to find out what speed our line SHOULD be capable of, not just what it has been or what Sky say they've now set it to after "fixing the fault".
& also how to work out, if we used it to stream iPlayer etc, which we've never been able to till now, & have no Satellite TV available due to landlord restrictions what limit would be enough from another ISP if not unlimited?
We've had a line fault for almost a year, but Sky don't accept that because I didn't keep chasing them non-stop, & for months was expecting them to let me know the result of an engineer inspection they accepted was needed.
After lots of messing around changing filters & eventually the router (I told them I wouldn't accept charge for it since I didn't believe it to be the fault, phone line being very noisy too) they finally sent out BT Openreach, who saw old wire on the house as I'd been saying & changed it.
Line is now quiet, but the adverts for other services show much higher bandwidth available at my postcode & really not happy with the attitude of Sky!

Login to your router and look at the modem stats. You need the downstream attenuation figure. Put that into the link below and you'll get an estimate of the maximum speed your line can handle (on a standard profile, which means 6dB SNR margin and interleaved - I'm not expecting you to understand these terms).
http://kitz.co.uk/adsl/max_speed_calc.php
For example my attenuation is 25dB so I should be able to get up to 18meg - I actually get 16.5meg which I'm entirely happy with.
If you post a copy of your detailed stats we can give better advice.0 -
Willing to try but....
How do I log in to the router?
Won't this just show me what Sky has set it to, rather than what theoretically might work with another ISP allowing it?0 -

The attenuation will be relevant for the line, not what Sky have set. We can determine that from the rest from the stats.0 -

Forget the kitz link above because Sky routers use their own custom firmware.
Enter http://192.168.0.1 into your browsers address bar or click on the link.
The Default Username for the Sky router is : admin
The Default Password for the Sky router is : sky
Post your line stats. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
Yesterday the iPlayer speed test gadget showed;
download 3510 kbps
streaming (best) 3410kbps.
then the sky rep said she'd reset it to what is should get without the line fault & told me our max would be 10
This is what I found doing the "log in to router"
Modem
Modem Status Connected
DownStream Connection Speed 10239 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 605 kbps
VPI 0
VCI 38
So...... what does it mean? Should I expect to run several things through this & stream tv/video?0 -
You need to post the ADSL Link figures e.g. as shown here::doh: Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

Is that all there is? No more-detailed stats? (We need to see Attenuation figures ... they are measured in dB).
Edit: like espresso shows.0 -
Ok, this is all I see apart from the "What's connected", which is currently me & the printer. Hope it means something to you!
