Trying to record BBC Listen Again

  • to the above comment about most shows doing podcasts, these podcasts don't contain full music tracks, its not the whole show.
  • Use WM Recorder to record streaming RM/WM broadcasts. Works a treat!

This is a thorny old issue, which has been caused by Realplayer (whose streaming technique the BBC chose to offer their online material through) disabling its recording facility, long, long ago. The BBC probably chose Realplayer for just this reason in order to avoid copyright problems.

Download "Net Transport". The provider's own site now offers this as a 90-day trial, though I use an older version 1.87 which can be found at http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=nettransport. Install this.

Now visit the BBC page you wish to capture a steam from, and start the stream playing. Right-click anywhere on the streaming page and select "Download all by Net Transport". There are various files available to download, but you only want the .ram file, so uncheck the others, and OK. A Net Transport window then invites you to start the download.

Now you can convert the resulting .ram file to something useable such as mp3, wma etc, using dbpoweramp music converter or streambox ripper as mentioned above.

    Hi All,
I spent a lot of the weekend trying out the various ideas suggested above with varying degrees of success & some frustrations.
After consideration I feel most comfortable with Flashgot & Flashget to download ( Flashget & Net Transport seemed identical in this situation) & Super to convert to MP3.
Magic was by far the simplest to use converter but cost $20.
So thanks again for all the helpful advice & ideas - it has been a great eye opener.

Also consider SWITCH to convert to MP3 - free - http://www.nch.com.au/switch/

Can I ask, did you manage to record any of the listen again shows without that annoying 'bleep' that realplayer introduces?

    Thanks.
It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.

For streamed MP3, I used to use the Streamripper plugin for WinAmp:

    It worked flawlessly for me.

You're quite right - even simpler to use.

No sign of a "bleep" anywhere.

I have found the most reliable method to get streaming BBC into my MP3 player is to play it in realplayer while doing a timed record in Audacity, then Export to MP3. Sound scheme is all sounds OFF, and this works in the background while I do other things.

BUT it always saves to MONO (says so while doing it). Not a big deal as I record mainly speech. But any idea how to get Audacity to save project in STEREO? I might start a thread on Techie Stuff but thought I'd try here first.

[ Edit: niow fixed - a glitch in Audacity - change input to Line In then back to Stereo Mix and both L and R meter are now flickering and the project exports to MP3 Stereo by default ]
  • But I don't think that screamer-radio will record BBC Listen Again programs. Also they're now doing skydive recordings from the north london parachute centre on the bbc iplayer i believe!Because many of the BBC radio shows are doing podcasts now anyway.:j
