I thought vets had to be intelligent to pass all those exams and qualify to be a vet.

Obviously didn't take one in plain common sense :(

I'd have done the same as you, and I would have been bloody furious at the vet's response.

So, am I right in thinking that you've not had him scanned for a chip?

Is there another vet who could do this for you or what about RSPCA?

That might get him reunited with his owners quicker than posters.

Just thinking - he might have managed to get into a car (not necessarliy his owners') and be quite a way from home.

Ignore the vet, you did the right thing. The member of staff would have said if it lived locally and it was there all the time.

Sounds most likely that its got out of someones car by accident, or is very genuinely lost and disorientated to end up in a busy supermarket carpark during shop opening hours.

Did the vet at least scan it for a microchip?

The vets attitude is the same as people saying to not feed strays because it 'encourages' them (how would they like to be starving and turned away).

Luckily I know from experience that my vets would certainly not act in that way (and they wouldn't be my vets if they ever did act like that).

I didn't want to make another thread but what would you guys do if you knew of two kittens (5/6 months max) were not being cared for?
My best friend knows of someone who has split with her OH about a month ago, this person has made it clear she doesn't like cats(they were her ex's idea) and it appears that she has shut them outside. BF's friend lives next to the person and has seen her spraying the kittens with water when they come to the door. He also feeds the kittens, last week one got into his house and their dog got hold of it and gave it a nasty shake (I think it should have went to the vet!)

BF has contemplated taking the kittens in as strays to a vet, seeing if they're chipped and if not rehoming them herself in her own home. The kittens do have collars on. What do you guys think?

jen007, problem with this thread being public is that people may not feel they should recommend what might be seen as stealing. My attitude is that she is shooing them away so they must not belong to her, and it is now your BF who is feeding them so again they must not belong to her. Actual owership of a cat is very difficult to prove in court, and I would definitely count these kittens as not belonging to her any more.

I think you should have started a new thread, but yes, get them out.

OP- not clear, did you get the cat scanned for a chip?

I picked up a well manky cat once, the most awful matted cat/Perisn I had ever seen and oil stains from where he was hiding under cars. Looked like a long term stray. Took it to our shelter and blow me he had a chip and actually lived at the house where I had picked him up outside.

Took him back with a stern telling off to the 'loving'owner, and a few weeks later saw him looking tip top, all looked after.

Why not suggest he goes and speaks to the woman and offers to re-home them? By the way she's acting towards them, she may be glad to have them taken off her hands.

to the OP, I would have done the same. Can't believe the vet told you to take it back to the car park!!

I think the sooner these poor little kittens are rehomed by someone who cares about them the better. How cruel can anyone be to shut them out of what was their home and then spray them with water. What the hell is up with people, taking it out on defenceless animals. The winter is coming on too. Please advise your Bf to get them out of that horrible situation asap.

WARNING Theses kittens are at the age where they urgently, urgently need to be neutered. Something needs to be done asap.

  • In answer to queries re chip, yes our vet checked him and he is not chipped, he is wearing a collar but there is no info on that the supermarket car park is immediately adjecant to houses, who's gardens back on to it, but which have the very long drop:eek:into the car park, and there is a small housing estate along the side of the approach road to said supermarket, I have posters up at all approaches and roads further away and the charity shop that gave me the cardboard box to put him in to drive him home,(this is on the main road) the supermarket have put posters up too, but I will go and check in the morning as I spoke to a young lad on customer services and someone higher up might not have allowed him to do this for me. I will be doing the next few roads asap too! He is eating and drinking well and is very happy to be in the warm, spread out on DS bed lol!!!
P.S He is un neutered so if he does get to go home I will diplomatically suggest maybe they sort it now that he is going out, if he ends up staying with us he will be booked in as soon as we settle him.
