Organic food in supermarkets

^ Yes saw the Ecover in there last week still, seems to be constantly stocked but shame they don't stock many items..0

I think the Under the Sun is cheaper ?0

So far I bought Under the Sun and non bio powder on offer at Ocado, Waitrose and Sainsbos so that's why I'm unsure what the RRP is.0

Riverford arrived this morning and it's really nice and fresh veg. Although they don't specify a time it has arrived within the same expected 2 hr slot both times.
I got the Favourites box for £15.35. Pic of the box below and haven't added in the extras in the pic. The potatoes weighed 1.5kg and there is quite a bit of veg, more than I expected of each item ie 20 carrots and 9 onions - it's a lot of these 3 items and probably caters for your traditional meat eating type of meal as I don't tend to base my meals around these things.
With the extras eg, with the fennel I got 2 bulbs so am happy with the value. The other extras were lettuce and watercress, both very fresh. The eggs look lovely and have a good long date on so would have been laid early this week I estimate.
The packaging is probably better than the Ocado box ie the potatoes are in a strong brown bag which is great for storage, nice cardboard type punnets for the softer items of mushrooms and tomatoes so avoiding damage and the lettuce and watercress are in plastic which is necessary.
Items have been cleaned but slightly dirtier than Ocado was - they probably cater more to the supermarket shopper who wants super clean veg though.
Hard to say what is better value, the Ocado box had more items but was a few £ more expensive too. Will no doubt use both of these companies again though as very pleased with both.

Looks nice and fresh Kirri, especially impressed by the cauli, tomatoes and onions.
My Riverford order turned up too.. this week the aubergine was in a bag.. marked aubergineMushrooms in a punnet with cardboard sleeve (lovely). Fresh ginger in a net. The butter did turn out to be salted so that has gone in freezer for Maman.
Ham and leek pies and homity pies are going in freezer for OH's lunches - he loves them and I think 2 for 2.95 isn't bad.
The milk (99p for 1 litre) is OK not as nearly as good as Abel & Cole's, I use it as emergency milk in between running out Friday and getting 4 litres from A&C Monday.
Am tempted to get the Calon Wen unhomogenised organic from Ocado but sometimes it runs out and then we'd be trekking to Sainsbury's or McDonald's for milk0 -
The broccoli is nice and dark green too, just doesn't look it on my pic. Watercress looks the best I've seen, will have some tonight. Just opened the potatoes, look very good, covered with slight layer of dirt. I love getting veg boxes though may have to resurrect my Delia onion tart recipe as still have some org shallots from Waitrose, more onions from the Ocado box and now even more onions today!
^ That sounds a good price for the pies. All the stuff I had ready done (in the xmas hamper) was so good. Do want to try A&C as well though and will get some dairy stuff. I like salted butter on toast but tend to get both unsalted and salted.0 -
Kirri - now you've got me thinking of French onion tart and Quiche Lorraine and I can't eat pastry !
We found some Duchy Originals from Waitrose unsmoked organic back bacon in the bottom of the freezer so I'm having the rest of it for lunch.
I'm not keen on eating nitrates in bacon. Did have nitrate free bacon from Laverstoke Park Farm once and though it tasted lovely it was a horrid grey colour. I use bacon to cook with occasionally eg bacon-wrapped pheasant or butternut squash.
We've decided to try

President organic unsalted butter
http://www.frenchclick.co.uk/p-4837-grand-fermage-beurre-moule-biologique-doux-250g.aspx
Grand Fermage organic unsalted butter
Prices are  but if I add up what we're NOT buying then yeah we can treat ourselves.
Talked to Boots today about their Boots Organic baby range and it's all certified organic. They are doing a 3 for 2 ATM on things like toddler cereal bars and since they have no added salt or sugar etc OH will eat as snacks. Some of the stuff is made for Boots by Kallo.
Abel & Cole..
I would recommend A&C organic free range eggs, organic milk, organic Cheddar, organic tzatziki, organic coleslaw, organic houmous (although I think Riverford's has the edge). Really liked the brazil nut roast (had at Christmas).. there's soo much. Actually, don't think there's been anything we've tried and not liked.0 -
quite jealous Kirri, looks great and I bet it tastes good too
got some organic salad tomatoes in Morrisons today £1, they also had organic cherry toms for £1.30 I think - quite fair prices.
Also got organic milk, organic raisins, but the rest of the small shop was non organic - pineapple, chicken, oranges, salad bagsThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I'm loving this thread - ty to all who post
I've gradually shifted my shopping habits and am now considering riverford or Abel and cole for a regular veg box. I'd be swayed by a deal but can't find any ATM! Id appreciate knowing if anyone have a preference either way?
No Ocado in my area, but a good Waitrose which I use mainly, alongside Lidl.
Tia!
