My mother called me today and told me that she's decided to buy organic fruit and veg now. She asked me to do a price comparison between her nearest supermarkets, Sainsbury's, ASDA and Tesco.

Generally ASDA was the cheapest, although who knows how much her nearest store will actually stock.

4 organic lemons 1.87 ASDA are 1.50 Sainsbury's
4 organic kiwi fruit 1.40 Tesco are 99p ASDA, £1 Sainsbury's

Don't buy Sainsbury's SO organic dwarf beans 250g 2 for 2.50 to 22/01/13 OMG they are tough as old boots :eek:

The Sainsbury's SO organic lamb steaks £6 are a tad chewy but are really flavourful.

Edwardian don't know if you've aready noted it on your thread but asda have 2 bags of organic pasta for £1.50. Thought this was quite good it's the 500g bags, may be of use to you.

The beans have probably been flown halfway round the world and picked days ago - I can't bear supermarket beans, given that home grown beans change flavour within a couple of days of picking, I couldn't ever eat them from supermarkets again.

kirri - the allotments here are too far away from the house to be practicable so I don't have one. I tried growing runner beans in my garden but watering them made my honeysuckle get mildew, so I gave up.

just trying - I don't eat pasta as I low carb but lots of people do so thanks for noticing and sticking the offer on the thread

Came across Earth Natural Foods www.earthnaturalfoods.co.uk which is a shop in Kentish Town doing veg box deliveries in NW1, NW3, NW5, N7 and N19 free of charge. They also do deliveries to other parts of London for £7 or £4 on orders over £60 or you can do your own shopping in store and have them deliver for £3.

Been reading articles in The Grocer and Marketing Week. Waitrose has 2.4% of UK supermarket sales but 22% of organic. Duchy Originals profits are up 33% although overall organic sales are down despite the EU's I Love Organic initiative (oops). UK is the only country in Europe where organic sales are falling, although organic baby food sales are up massively and organic milk is now more than 10% of fresh milk sales.

IMO organic carrots definitely taste better if fresh, especially raw so I'd suggest looking for British. Generally, organic fresh milk tastes better than non-organic unless it;s fresh from a local dairy and please stay well clear of organic milk sold in Lidl. Moo organic UHT is great, better than most other non organic milks fresh or UHT.

Organic teabags from Tesco and Sainsbury's are not as good as Co-op 99 teabags, PG Tips or Sainsbury's Red Label.

Seeds of Change pasta/curry sauces are awesome. Suma tinned carrot and coriander soup is dire, Heinz organic cream of tomato soup tastes about the same.

Cloud Nine organic meatballs from Sainsbury's are really good. Tesco organic diced beef is really dire very tough and Sainsbury's not any better. Mince is mince be it organic or not and Waitrose British veal mince is non-organic but reared on non GMO feed and knocks spots off all beef mince, IMO. Sainsbury's does some very good very tender organic steak and some which isn't it's a bit hit and miss.

Laverstoke Park does great Black Pudding and buffalo burgers. Brescia organic Mozzarella is better than Laverstoke Park's. The lamb scrag in a stew is fantastic. Not sure about the sausages, some OK ones but nothing outstanding yet, not as good as wild boar sausages or Hoad's Korkers.

Duchy Originals from Waitrose organic unsmoked back bacon is fantastic and better than Sainsbury's (which costs the same). Both have nitrates to keep the bacon pink. Laverstoke Park organic unsmoked back bacon tastes great but looks grey. A cheaper alternative to organic back bacon is Helen Browning organic streaky which is very tasty. Organic bacon does taste way better.

Haven't found an organic ham without preservatives yet ! So we buy prosciutto which should be just pork legs and salt. There are usually offers around eg Sainsbury's, Marks and Spencer but if not ASDA and Lidl are cheaper. Some can be frozen, see
packaging.

There are no baked beans but Heinz organic bajed beans though there are loads of organic baked beans out there.

May be try it.
