  • Hello everybody,
I have been trying to keep up with this thread and found it really useful. I try and buy organic when ever we can afford it. About 6 months ago we switched to organic eggs and chicken, beef when we can afford it and various fruit and veg when its been on offer or reduced. Also switched to organic easy cook rice at Sainsburys (500g £1.29) OH says it's the nicest rice he's had. Amazing how such a simple ingredient can be so different. We are both concerned about all the !!!! we consume and absorb so slowly and surely we are trying to do something about it. I grew up with an abundance of fruit and veg thanks to my grandfather who had 3 allotments and a huge garden. He passed away 20 years ago and I still miss him. Every visit would end with a walk down the garden and loading me up with bags of fresh fruit and veg. He didn't use chemicals and nasties and everything tasted amazing. I don't really think I appreciated it then as I do now as it was something I had grown up with and had been down the land helping him from the age of 4.
    Anyway back to topic :)
Have just started shopping with ocado and find them excellent. My next thing is Abel and Cole, does anyone know of any first time shopper codes for them ?
Edwardia Thanks for your comments about eggs. We usually get duchy or sainsbobs organic but will be getting some from Abel an Cole.
Sausages, we love Waitrose gourmet sausages but they aren't organic. Don't like duchy, has anyone got any recommendations. We have also tried organic from Sainsbobs amonst others but after so many disappointments we are back to Waitrose.

Hi rufydoofyM welcome to the thread !

I looked at codes for Abel & Cole and the Brainfood 25% off first four boxes is for the office fruit box delivery service. If you haven't registered and go to https://www.abelandcole.co.uk any offers for new customers should show on the initial page you see. If you know someone who uses Abel & Cole they get a free gift if you mention their name by registering via customer services but I don't know whether you get anything as a new customer.

I haven't found any organic sausages that I like yet but haven't tried many. So far nothing is as good as Jempson's wild boar sausages or Hoad's Korkers which are difficult to get hold of anyway. Maybe others have recommendations ?

    Bacon-wise my favourites are:
1st. Duchy Originals from Waitrose unsmoked organic back bacon 3.99 from Waitrose and Ocado
2nd Sainsbury's SO organic unsmoked back bacon 3.99

I don't like Helen Browning organic streaky bacon, Laverstoke Park Farm organic bacon (great taste looks disgusting) and the worst is Tesco organic bacon eww.

I found that Duchy eggs spread out a lot in the pan when fried and when boiled they are unpredictable as some seem to have almost no yolk. Good taste though which is why I loved them at first.

Sainsbos Woodland eggs eww, Happy Eggs taste better !

Daylesford eggs from Ocado are good but Ocado often seems to run out of eggs for weekend deliveries

But for me Abel & Cole eggs are numero uno mmmm with Daylesford second.

My local Morrisons lately keep running out of organic apples and are out of stock for days on end. Is that in other ones too, if anyone knows? I need my apple a day...

Btw I think there's something dodgy going on with the MSE clock as I certainly wasn't up at 0532 this morning

I include wild fish, wild game and organic farmed fish on the thread and I was looking at Shorters Club and checking prices against https://www.mysupermarket.co.uk

    Princes wild pink salmon 213g cheapest price (offer) £2 to 02/01/13 Tesco so 12 x £2 = £24
    Princes wild pink salmon 213g x 12 Shorters Club 17.59 https://www.shortersclub.co.uk
    That's a 6.41saving on Tesco special offer

Not all the Shorters Club prices are cheaper than supermarket offers that's why you need a calculator but it can be eye-opening to see the kind of profit supermarkets are making because obviously wholesalers are making profits too.

    www.suma.coop

Suma the wholefood co-operative has got recipes up on the website as used in their canteen if anyone is looking for more veggie recipes to use with organic food.

www.abelandcole.co.uk has recipes up on the website too and their own cookbook which is fab and I thoroughly recommend.

Anyone else have any recipe websites or books to recommend ? Don't necessarily need to be organic or veggie.. I still use recipes in my mother's old Dairy Book of Home Cookery from the 70s :D I found a 70s paperback copy of the Cranks cookbook as well :)

    Any idea please post !

Went to the nearby Sainsburys Local as I had run out of organic milk, and saw the price of their organic apples. £1.80 for a measly FOUR of them!

I'll wait for Morrisons to stock up. Meanwhile it's bananas and satsumas all the way.

Tesco organic apples are £2.50 for 6! I think that's quite expensive.
