I'm a college-trained ex chef and husband is the son of a chef so we would rather eat great food all year round than live on yellow-stickered junk food and vacation abroad.

Between 1994 and 1999 I ballooned and was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes by sheer chance in 2007 though not showing any of the classic symptoms. I am down from size 22 to nearly size 12 now thanks to low carbing. In March I went organic and that has made a noticeable difference to my health too. I've now got normal blood glucose more or less all the time.

It worked for me and I'm happy and so is my GP. I wouldn't go back to non-organic or high carb now.

Anyway in previous pages I've added organic food products I found online including Swedish, Greek, Spanish and Italian. I listed organic food I found in Selfridges, Fortnums, Harvey Nicks too. So hopefully Quasar you'll find some new things (some have shops in London).

But any tips you can give would be great !

Do you take brewers yeast? I'm no doctor so obviously I can't say much but brewers yeast contains highly absorbable chromium which has a stabilising effect on insulin. I've always taken a tablespoon a day (not diabetic), for the wealth of minerals and complete protein it contains - 8 grams high protein per tablespoon, making a substantial addition for vegans, vegetarians and anyone on a tight budget. Its high vitamin B content also puts it on a par with a vegetable serving, imho.

Brewers yeast and kefir are my must-have-daily foods.

I introduced my mother to Respect Organics' organic carrot cake
www.respectorganics.com and she called me tonight to tell me that it has gone up in her local Sainsbury's from 1.80 to 2.30 but personally I still think that's a very good price for the cake.

jeanmd beat me to it and posted a thread today highlighting that Holland & Barrett's website is offering Buy One Get One Half Price on everything on the website www.hollandandbarrett.com

If you're into organic baking, I bought my mother the Neal's Yard Wholefoods organic vine fruits to put in the Christmas pud and she says they are the best she's ever used... and no I won't be eating the high carb Christmas pud myself !

No, I don't take Brewer's Yeast but I did take a chromium supplement from H&B which did nothing for me.

On the other hand, a research doctor in Canada whom I've emailed with, recommended live yogurt so generally I get through 1kg of Yeo Valley live organic natural yogurt a week. There are those who say that isn't Paleo/Primal but if a diabetes researcher suggests it's a good move I'm not going to argue and it's delicious stuff.

I don't have high cholesterol so I get quite a lot of my protein from eggs.. yep around 14 of them a week sometimes more. I used to rave over the Duchy Originals organic free range Colombian Black Tail eggs but then I discovered the Abel & Cole organic free range and MMMMM..

Milk-wise we get through 10 litres a week so I buy the Moo organic semi-skimmed UHT from Ocado £1 per litre. Otherwise I would have a fridge full of milk and I;d be worrying about it going off so the labrador would be guzzling even more than he does now.. convinced he thinks he's a cat.

In the USA, organic food is available in Aldi, Safeway, Wal-Mart, Target etc but here it's really difficult to find. This thread started off being organic food in supermarkets but has to be just organic food now.

Lidl.. organic milk, pasta, carrots, mushrooms and tomatoes but maybe not every week. I do recommend the Heirloom organic tomatoes from Nature and More https://www.natureandmore.com if you see them.

Tried the M&S organic orange juice this week and it's lovely, not overly sweet like most, can't remember the price, not cheap, £2.69 ish for a litre I think but is not from concentrate.

Edwardia, where did you get the NY fruit from?? I usually use Crazy Jack.

I love the Respect carrot cake, didn't know they did a choc one too, not seen that in supermarkets though.

The Neal's Yard Wholefoods vine fruits came from Holland & Barrett which is doing Buy One Get One Half Price on the website (don't know about shops) and orders over £20 free delivery.

You can sometimes find Crazy Jack's stuff on Approved Food www.approvedfood.co.uk

I bought the Neal's Yard vine fruits as I couldn't find organic currants anywhere. I bought organic Waitrose stuff as well but as far as my mother was concerned the Neal's Yard had the edge slightly.

I haven't seen Respect chocolate cake either Kirri must admit. As I low carb I don't eat either, I had about one mouthful.

However for chocaholics contemplating low carb, Lindt Excellence 90% cocoa dark chocolate is only 14g carbs for the 100g bar. Once you get used to the rich, dark, slightly bitter taste of dark chocolate, Galaxy etc just tastes like chocolate flavoured sugar eww

I'm still looking for organic 90% cocoa chocolate :(

Don't have an M&S in my town :( may have to get my mother to bring some up.

Hotel Chocolat do 90% cocoa organic chocolate. It's NOT cheap, so don't faint when you see the prices. :o
You may have to navigate the site a bit to find it. I found it in one of their stores in London - £3.75 for a poxy little bar!

Thanks for that Quasar. Not had Hotel Chocolat though my sister in law raves about it. I'm sure it's not as expensive as the chocolate I used to prefer www.leonidas.com

Kirri..www.boojabooja.com says now available in 78 Waitrose stores..

Just found Rococo www.rococochocolates.com with one organic drinking chocolate and 34 bars of organic chocolate varying in price between 1.30 and 4.50 for single bars and around 12.50 for gift boxes.

...I would add that my reason for eating organic is not so much the nutrient content of the food, as what is NOT in it: untold and badly tested pesticides and chemical fertilisers on produce that penetrates thin skins or leaves and won't all wash off, and hormones/antibiotics fed to animals.

Thank you for making this point.

Commercial interests continually say that organic food is not always more nutritious, and sometimes less so..

However, they keep quiet about the pesticides/fertilisers/hormones/antibiotics etc.

I do wonder if children growing up today will have MORE illness as a result of this unhealthy mass-produced food. We are given the line that mass production is necessary to feed the world, but generally it is more profitable for the producers.

If you know of any more organic farms which sell mail order or in a farm shop please post !

    Longwood Organic Farm, Suffolk
    http://www.longwoodfarm.co.uk/

Only visited a couple of times because we are finding the transition to organic meat and poultry an expensive one (need to change some eating habits, more veg, less meat etc) but the meat we have had has been excellent. I've ordered our Christmas meats from Longwood Farm and am truly looking forward to them, I think they'll be superb.
