Organic food in supermarkets

ahem
I was in Waitrose Tuesday looking at olive oil with my mother (there are three long shelves of it in this store). My mother is muttering, telling me that according to some cooking show she watched - hopefully not Come Dine With Me  - the best stuff comes from Puglia and she thrusts a bottle into my mitts which is mostly written in Italian.
So I'm womanfully trying to translate out of Italian into English and she's moaning at my slowness.. so I'll repeat now what I said then: " Italian is my fourth language".
It could have been worse, at least I wasn't telling a handsome Italian guy that I liked his beautiful black cabbage
Hmm sorry but.... Very best olive oil (especially extra virgin) is either Tuscan or Ligurian. Something to do with the soil.
Please do share your translation. :ABe careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -
Any fudge lovers here ?

Found organic vegan Thai spring rolls too which could be good for husband's lunch.

He loves the Abel & Cole large organic sausage rolls but wouldn't call them large. He enjoyed the Nakd cocoa orange bar, lurved the Abel & Cole perfect potato salad ("it is") and thinks the Waitrose organic sliced turkey breast is too expensive but was OK.0 -
For anyone who likes fudge ^ the Riverford fudge last Christmas was amazing (and I didn't think I liked fudge before that!).
I had the Suma organic vegan red pesto tonight for the first time, nice taste but bit saltier than I would like, the one from La Bio Idea I get from Olivers is probably still my first choice. Think the price was roughly the same.0 -

I was thinking that Puglia seemed unlikely, isn't that the part of Italy with the caves ?
Have to admit that I can't even remember the name of the olive oil she thrust at me, but it was a tall thin bottle with the front and back printed on the glass rather than on a label.
My uncle's first wife had a sister who was married to a Sicilian doctor. My cousins are both fluent because they would spend summers in Italy but I had to work summers to pay my way through college and couldn't go
My Italian is pretty abysmal even though I had an Italian boyfriend at one point. My Arabic is worse though, mostly just um swear words
Mentioning Riverford they have chocolate advent calendars in stock now with Montezuma chocolates inside.. 9.99 though

Most of Italy produces olives and olive oil, as it has a huge coastline. But the best are still Ligurian and Tuscan, and when it's top quality it is extremely expensive, but delicious.
Italian is not a very important language to know unless you study the arts and/or music. You don't miss much by not knowing it - except for reading food labels
Yes there are some caves in Puglia, but there are also many in other areas.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -
I have (small) olive trees in my back garden - lots of blossom this year but no olives
Think the UK needs a bit more global warming
While I'm thinking about olives, OH says Sainsbury's SO organic kalamata olives are a bit hit and miss as some he's eaten were bitter.
Gail's Bread olive sourdough from Ocado is quite possibly the most olive-y bread I've ever smelled. I tried a teeny teeny bit and I can see why OH was enraptured.

Yes it's expensive at over £2 but a good meal shared with family or friends sticks in the memory long after the actual taste has faded away.0 -

I've only been able to get the Sacla organic pesto locally. That seems salty too.
Ocado stocks Pollen, Mr Organic and Daylesford - I refuse to pay a fiver for pesto made with almonds and sunflower oil  If OH fancies a pesto-creme fraiche sauce on fish say, if he has time in the summer he'll whip out my pestle and mortar and make some himself. I think he finds it therapeutic.
The ultimate therapeutic (and Italian) recipe has to be risotto though. Arborio rice and home-made stock, adding a ladle at a time, reading a book, listening to music, stirring and drinking red wine <sigh>0 -
^ I had risotto the other night ^ though with bought Marigold vegan organic stock..
I did make basil pesto the other week but more so to put on pizza, for some reason I only like red pesto with pasta.. but have never made that. I will check the salt level on the La Bio Idea pot when I next get one, must be a lot lower. Ocado don't have any vegan red org pesto
Daylesford are so expensive I often don't look at their products (their spelt & rye biscuits for cheese were lovely though but not much product for the price - even when on offer). Think they have a new shop I could get to by car so I may go and have a look.
The only olives I've ever liked were from Riverford - garlic ones I think - before that I've always really hated them.0 -
I can't remember whether the green olives with wild garlic which we had this summer were from Riverford, Ocado or Abel & Cole but there can't be many green olives with wild garlic in a pouch not a jar ?? We bought them on offer and loved them, they were just fantastic. We were able to sit in the garden and pretend we were somewhere hot in Europe
Daylesford stuff from Ocado is really expensive. But although products are often cheaper on the Daylesford website, I balk at paying £8 for postage :eek:0 -
