BBC iPlayer and LG TV problem

  • Just an added thought.

When setting up your TV, what country/area/location did you put in?

Im not sure if it would affect the TV or not but if the TV isnt set to UK at least then possibly with iplayer made for UK audience it may conflict.

Again you could go through the settings or apply this if you do a factory reset on your TV.

Again, ill mention, Do you have a dongle in your TV? as ive not seen it mentioned anywhere that you have a dongle.

Without the dongle, the TV will not connect to the web and will therefor not update iplayer app on your TV. In fact without the dongle you will not be able to view any of the online smart/interactive services.

With some TVs it makes a huge difference what country you select during setup. I once had to sort out a sony tv somebody thought was faulty. turns out they'd set their TV up saying it was in france so the tuner picked up all the channels but put them in a bizarre order. this may well be similar with the iplayer as it's not available outside of the uk.

I would argue that the purpose of a TV is to be able to watch TV. Having Iplayer is an extra but not having that doesn't make the TV "Not fit for purpose".

Of course the TV's fit for purpose. It may not be "as described" though.

If a TV is sold with the ability to watch BBC Iplayer, and it doesn't let you do that, it's not fit for purpose (it is also not as described).

It is irrelevant that you can still watch live TV. The OP bought a multi-purpose product. One of the purposes doesn't work. Therefore it is not fit for purpose.

The OP could wait indefinitely for it to start working. It may or may not happen. Of course, the longer they wait the less chance they have of getting a resolution if LG never do implement the feature. In this case the safest course of action is to seek a remedy immediately.

    Agree 100%

I'm amazed that so many people just put up with products that don't do 'what it says on the tin'. It makes it so easy for manufacturers to fool us into buying.

I'm sorry but you're wrong. A court would decide on whether the TV is " as described", plain and simple, ie, if a feature is specified and it's not there then it's not "as described". This is sold as a "Smart TV", and for all intents and purposes the TV continues to operate as such, albeit without this certain feature. Fitness of purpose doesn't come into it.

This absolutely. Anything else is opinion and speculation. :)

As anyone with common sense would know, internet services are transient in nature. They will one day cease to exist, even if the TV still functions in every other way. If the retailer bandied about that it has iplayer, then that would be one thing.

If the box says iplayer is available however, I expect that there will be some form of asterisk and a disclaimer mentioning how LG cannot be held responsible for services that may vanish, appear, or otherwise not necessarily perform as expected, because they are not a solid part of the specification, but a "serving suggestion" if you will.
  • From what I can see, Curry's advertise the use of BBC iPlayer (without any disclaimer), and LG do not mention BBC iPlayer at all.
I'm not a lawyer, but it would seem if anyone was false advertising, it would be Curry's not LG.

LG do actually mention iPlayer for this model. However, as this thread is 2 years old I imagine they solved any issue that was around in October 2012!

Smart TV provides your gateway to a world of web-based apps – from catch-up TV services such as BBC iPlayer, streaming films on demand through LoveFilm or to your favourite social networks like Facebook & Twitter.
