Talktalk Youview questions

Hi

A couple of questions if anyone can help.
There is a £50 engineer fee for a talktalk youview install. If pressed, will they allow a self install and waive the £50?
Also, with my current talktalk broadband, I get regular buffering latency when watching the various iplayer, 4od programmes, yet the talktalk website says my bb speed is ok for youview. Do they optimise your download speed in some way for the tv sevice or are they just trying to sell me a pup?

Thanks for any advice.

  • You ought to try a broadband speed checker to see what you get. Could be a fault on your line etc, microfilter, or router. If you get talk talk they will use the same infrastructure so you won't see a difference. You could go for it and then report a fault on the line which they can fix for you. I did this with sky before and went from being cut off every 10mins to around 7mb.

I was a YouView trialist. There is nothing complicated about setting up the box, any more than a normal PVR save that you need to connect it to your router. In fact my box is now with DD who is on Talk Talk broadband. We rebooted the box, it sensed the TT service and installed the relevant player.
As above you need around 4mbps for the players to work well, as you know the rest of the programming is normal freeview.

    Thanks

I can get more than 4 mbps but occasionally it drops to 2 or 3. I'll give CS a ring and see if they can tune my download speed. I do live a couple of miles from the exchange though. I'll also ask if they will allow a self install.

Unless your BB has been capped then there is nothing that can be done. Post your router line statistics.

  • From my maths your distance to the exchange is about 3.5km and the figures below I.e. noise margin look ok too. Those figures will vary though. I can't see an issue from your stats.

    Hi Stevemcol,

At present we do not offer a self installation option.

The reason for this is as part of the managed installation wih a BrightSparks engineer speed optimisation is conducted.

In regards your current buffering issues is the router located at the master socket and are you using a wired connection to your PC/Laptop?

If you contact us either via Twitter @TalkTalkCare or join the TalkTalk Members Forum we can look into this in more depth.

    Regards

I'd be interested in knowing the nature of the speed optimisation service, is it just an i-plate, or does the engineer have network access?

    A 'BrightSparks' engineer? Classic!
OP, the YouView box is already down by £50 at RS. Why not just bite the bullet and buy your own and install it?
