Whats wrong with putting a no cold callers sign on your door? I'm never bothered by charity collectors or anyone else since I put it up.

As said, we're in a cul-de-sac that has a whopping great sign at the entrance saying "no cold callers". Does anyone take any notice of it? Do they F

Despite the sign, and despite the fact that the average age of the residents here is a billion and one we still get the full gamut of charity collectors, JWs, salesmen and !!!!!! trying to flog bags of half-inched compost off the back of their white flatbed etc etc.

The problem is with these signs is that nobody thinks that they apply to them.

Must be your areas because I've never had a problem, nor actually has my Mum who has the same sign. In the 5 years its been there I think the only person who's knocked was someone selling double glazing and that was a long time ago.

Probably helps that my front door is first floor though. Lot of steps to climb for me not to answer :D
  • I just cannot understand why people put up with this they must be mad.
Tell them to f*** Off, say you donate to your chosen charity an that's it.

You can politely tell them but there's no need to be rude or swear.

    I've been Money Tipped!
We've just had the Heart Foundation knock on the door at 9pm - they were told to clear off before they'd finished telling us who they were.

    Woke up our son too.

I do believe they are like trick-or-treaters.....when they know which houses pay up they pass the word around and turn up again and again!!
I don't think it is too late but it obviously feels later as it's dark at that time. I can see how it would be worrying to the elderly or single people though.
Not had the pleasure of charity collectors but we used to get artists selling their canvases - it was THAT posh an area lol. I bought one once and sure enough others would turn up every few months :-(
We also used to get the naughty boys selling cleaning materials - apparently the probation service thought it would be a good idea to send convicted criminals door to door selling.
After a while I used to sneakily check before answering the door.....but that was to hide from the Jehovah lady!!

My DS works for a charity company door knocking. They are licenced by the council to knock until 9pm. I appreciate that a lot of elderly people will not open the door once its dark, but as another poster commented with work and kids activities it can be 7pm or later before some are home.

Yes, and once I arrive home after a long day, and am busy trying to prepare dinner, see to kids, get everyone prepared for the following day etc etc, the last thing I want is someone knocking on my door trying to emotionally blackmail me into giving money to some cause or other.
  • 8pm is too late, I'd go mad if they woke my daughter up, plus its pitch black at that time.
6pm tops for me, but even then I wouldnt answer anyway haha.

I'd like to see an end to charities and cold callers in general at your door, I'd make it ilegal, you feel like youre being harrassed in your own home, especially where I live, some days you can have 6 cold callers a day despite my signs.

  • While we're on the subject of charities
what do you make of this?

My parents had some 'junk' mail addressed to me with their address. I havn't lived there since 1989.
It was macmillan cancer charity and had raffle tickets in to sell.
How would they have my maiden name and address from 23 years ago??

The only language they understand very often, the word no is not in their Vocabulary.
