Buying now is a bit of a risky move, on any tablet.
Although there are a couple of really good, lower priced androids out, there are now rumours (and leaked "true" info) of a couple of advances. So for the google nexus, bigger size, and price drops, and for apple the ipad mini (hopefully comparable price, unlike the full size ipad)
I'd wait till the mini is released (or at least the product info and price is officially released) as well as the same with the nexus.

Regarding itouch's, the prices are always similar upon release, so again I'd wait until the mini info is released. You don't necessarily need to get a hot of the production line one, an older gen, refurb might give lots more space for a same or similar price.

I'd recommend either the mini (if it's in your price range) or the nexus, once the newer ones have come out, and prices have settled.

as for whether kids should have them. Get with the times ;D Basically kids are growing up around these things, and the sooner you get your child integrated with technology the better start to life they will have. It's not about oneupmanship it's about being competent to walk into a situation and be able to use this, making learning for the future, and ease around technology better. Giving children a headstart has always been there. The parents who spent hours with their kids and their writing, or reading, so they were advanced when they hit school, or encouraging artistic tendencies or way back in my growing up days computer programming (which got my brother into a rather nice career for now). Sure paper books, and drawing are important, but as is technology now.

The issue is if the parent(s) consider it a safe activity, throw one at their kid as a form of sole entertainment. Parental supervision is needed in all activities now.

Thanks for the advice, having read all of the comments I was thinking of waiting for the Ipad Mini to come out and then either going for that or a Nexus depending on what they price the mini at. Thanks 8-)

    very sensible IMHO :)

Great little gadgets. Mine cost just over 70 with. a silicone cover, good enough for anyone to use let alone kids.

I've been an Android fan since Android came out (on the T-Mobile "Dream" phone) and bought my first Android Tablet on holiday in Shanghai back in Autumn of 2010. Subdequwntly, I've become an enthusiastic convert to the Ainol brand. It seems that the brands on offer here in the West are few and very expensive, while those offered to the Chinese domestic market are often of very high quality... and MUCH cheaper. (But we never hear of them!) Disadvantage of course is, you can't take 'em back to Argos if there's a problem. Right now, on a lowish budget, I'd commend the Ainol Novo 7 "Flame". A 7" tablet with a specification that's very similar to that of an iPad (Faster CPU, and more RAM than most iPads in fact) How much it costs depends on where you buy it from, and who you pay to deliver it, but "around £100" would be pretty close. I own two Ainiol tablets and my only regret was buying their "Aurora 2" model shortly before the (slightly better) "Flame" was released. Why the Ainol rather than a Nexus? Essentially because of the lack of an SD card slot in the Nexus. A 32 Gigabyte Micro SD card can be bought for surprisingly little (especially from play.com) My "Aurora 2" came with 16 Gigabytes of onboard memory, to which I added a 32 Gig SD card, and have an OTG cable (which allows you to plug-in USB devices, like Pendrives). I'd commend Merimobiles as a Chinese retailer, although you can find even LOWER prices on AliExpress (China's own EBay equivalent)

I would say you need to be a bit of tech knowledge if you buying those chinese pad.
There are people don't know how to flash rom, update firmware, can't be bother to spend time to look for solution from web to solve the problem. And the quality of chinese pad sometime is a bit hit and miss.
I did consider buying Aurora 2 instead of nexus 7 initially. However, consider the shipping cost and potential import tax & VAT, and warranty, I go for nexus 7 at the end.

    source of that info?
I thought the nexus7 was only about breaking even at current pricing...

Apologies for being a bit late with a response re the possible price reduction of the Nexus 7.

Here is the source of my info -

    http://www.phonesreview.co.uk/2012/10/08/nexus-7-price-cut-imminent-with-32gb-release/

I also see that PC World (etc) have knocked £10 off the 16 g/b version to £189 and there is also a further 5% Quidco cashback on offer with them over this weekend.

  • Oh dear, well the Ipad Mini has arrived at a higher price than I was hoping for!!

Current options look either the Nexus 7 or seeing if the Ipad 2 will come down in price atall with the 4 now being announced. Does anyone see this as being likely? Don't think I could justify 270 for the mini (the kids would use it at home anyway so a lot of the advantages of it being 'mini' wouldn't really apply) but if the Ipad 2 was close to that then maybe an option.

Just an amusing heads up, I was playing with Zeebox on my Nexus 7 whilst watching the TV,.
I noticed that when I looked a a particular channel I noticed the TV had mysteriously changed to the same one, spooky!

A little research revealed that the app is compatible with Sky+HD internet connected boxes, and will act like a simple channel changer.

    Where will it all end?
That gum you like is coming back in style.
