No the two stores are very different.
For your budget , much as I love the iPads, the Nexus 7's would win hands down, good solid tablet and an emerging OS with good store (not as consistent as Apples Appstore but Googles Play store will become more refined).
If you can afford £350+ per device then the iPad comes into its own.
Thanks for the info. Is it safe to assume the same apps would be available though?0 -
Your children like using playing with your iPod touch
It's a no brainer to me that you should stick with Apple0 -
No, although mainstream ones would (Angry birds for example).
Games wise, and we are talking mainstream games so not necessarily educational ones then the Apple Appstore has the advantage.
Educational wise, there are some fantastic interactive iBooks (Apple again) which has yet to be emulated, feature wise, on the Android platform.
But again, price is your issue, you can still have a very very good tablet with very good educational value with the Android platform, I would just recommend you look at Nexus 7's for this.0 -
iPad mini @ £249 for wifi only is the way I'm going to with my 5 & 7 year old, they both love our iPhones and family iPad but the 7 1/2 inch at the price will be mega.Week on Friday it gets revealed and if it's as good as I hoping it is then I shall get the extra funds for 10

I wasn't holding out for it as my USB-OTG cable just turned up for my 16GB version. Combined with this app and you can have unlimited storage for an extra £4

after a quick google seems there is a 32gb model leaked and will replace the 16gb at the 199 pricemark - glad i've been so indecisive now! This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

do you think that a 5yo and 8yo would honestly notice the difference between a decent android tablet or the much more expensive ipad for playing games and listening to music?
both interfaces are really quite simpleThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
iPads are good but pricey..as others have said wait for a possible price-drop on the Nexus before deciding.I shot a vein in my neck and coughed up a Quaalude.

I've got two 8-years-olds and we've bought a cheap (sub-£80) Android tablet each for Christmas. Charged them up and set them up with our home wifi and they work very well. No noticeable lag in using games or apps and the screens are pretty decent too. Good enough for kids at that age and will get them off my phone lolIn deep...0

Buying now is a bit of a risky move, on any tablet.
Although there are a couple of really good, lower priced androids out, there are now rumours (and leaked "true" info) of a couple of advances. So for the google nexus, bigger size, and price drops, and for apple the ipad mini (hopefully comparable price, unlike the full size ipad)
I'd wait till the mini is released (or at least the product info and price is officially released) as well as the same with the nexus.
Regarding itouch's, the prices are always similar upon release, so again I'd wait until the mini info is released. You don't necessarily need to get a hot of the production line one, an older gen, refurb might give lots more space for a same or similar price.
I'd recommend either the mini (if it's in your price range) or the nexus, once the newer ones have come out, and prices have settled.
as for whether kids should have them. Get with the times ;D Basically kids are growing up around these things, and the sooner you get your child integrated with technology the better start to life they will have. It's not about oneupmanship it's about being competent to walk into a situation and be able to use this, making learning for the future, and ease around technology better. Giving children a headstart has always been there. The parents who spent hours with their kids and their writing, or reading, so they were advanced when they hit school, or encouraging artistic tendencies or way back in my growing up days computer programming (which got my brother into a rather nice career for now). Sure paper books, and drawing are important, but as is technology now.
The issue is if the parent(s) consider it a safe activity, throw one at their kid as a form of sole entertainment. Parental supervision is needed in all activities now.0 -

very sensible IMHO......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0
