Hi all,
Myself and my other half are in the process of trying to decide what to buy our youngest two children (aged 5 and 8) for Xmas. Have decided to go for one big present each this year and up to now the thought had been to get them each an Ipod Touch as they are constantly on mine. Have since begun looking at tablets etc and now the choice seems a lot more complicated.
In terms of what they will be used for the 5 year old basically just plays on apps (games and phonics focussed stuff) and listens to music occasionally. Am sure he would make use of a lot of the websites he currently uses on the pc (Disney, etc) if the device we buy him has the capacity to do so. Our 8 year old plays on a lot of the apps but is also very into art related stuff and again would use a limited (and controlled) number of websites.
Now onto the difficult bit!! Whilst we could buy them different devices there is a fear that this may well lead to constant falling out!! Budget would be max of £200 each. Have so far looked at the ipod touch, galaxy tab and nexus 7 and am impressed by all to be honest. Ipads are beyond our budget t and the notion of them trying to share one between the two of them would probably result in the ipasd being pulled apart!!!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
(Currently not majorly bought into the 'Apple way of life' as only have an ipod classic and ipod touch 4g so this isn't a huge factor and the price of repurchasing some of the apps they like via android etc looks to be minimal.
Thanks.

There are rumours of a Nexus 7 price drop within the next couple of weeks tied in with the announce, ment of a 32 gb version (and probably to combat the introduction of the mini ipad).
The 32 gb version is expected to be priced at £199 which is the current price of the 16 gb.0 -
Nexus 7 if you are buying now
But I suggest wait until nov. ipad mini/ microsoft surface will probably be out that time.0 -

source of that info?
I thought the nexus7 was only about breaking even at current pricing...This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
If the child enjoys art why not buy them a load of paper, paints etc, and not waste your money on expensive electronic child minders.
I've heard you can still get books that are made from trees, who knew?
Rant over,
PS Love my Nexus 7!That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
Penrhyn, your post is extremely judgmental for no reason.
Why shouldnt the OP buy the kids a tablet if they think they would use it. Since they specifically said they currently have controlled use of a PC it's a bit harsh to imply they will be used as "expensive electronic child minders"
OP, a few of my friends have kids that use tablets (ipads etc) under controlled circumstances and love using them. They can be very educational and also handy on long journeys etc for keeping kids amused with movies, music or games. The Daily Mail

Break even for the £159 8GB model.
For extra 8GB memory, it won't cost extra £40. I will not be surprise if they make it £179 for 16GB model.0 -

I wasn't holding out for it as my USB-OTG cable just turned up for my 16GB version. Combined with this app and you can have unlimited storage for an extra £4

lol - not the most useful of answers to be honest. It may surprise you to hear that we have lots of paper, paints, books etc in the house already! We even take the kids out sometimes as well!!!
I don't really see the tablet being a waste of money - our Xmas budget would be approx £200 per child anyway. I was just hoping for some constructive ideas as to what would be the best option. Thanks for your time though...0 -

Am I right in assuming that 99.9% of the apps that are available for my ipod touch would also be available on the nexus? Where would one purchase apps for the nexus - would that be the android app store? Thanks0 -

No the two stores are very different.
For your budget , much as I love the iPads, the Nexus 7's would win hands down, good solid tablet and an emerging OS with good store (not as consistent as Apples Appstore but Googles Play store will become more refined).
If you can afford £350+ per device then the iPad comes into its own.0
