RIM is doomed. Everyone knows it. They'll end up just like Nokia - down the pan due to a lack of innovation. There really is only a niche requirement for physical keys on smartphones now
At least Nokia make quality hardware so they're floating due to their partnership with Microsoft
I'm sure someone would like to discuss this with you..
Nothing will happen within the lifetime of this ladies phone, so really no need to waste time with such a discussion.
At least the OP has at least a couple of sensible suggestions from which to choose.0 -

They said similar things about Woolworths and I think that they are due to go bust any day now... oh wait...0 -
Sorry the OP (me) has been away today at a meeting.
Honestly overwhelmed by all your suggestions. Have consulted with mother who says:
1. She does not want a granny phone - too ugly.
2. She will try out the screen/keyboard of an old blackberry, but may be too small. I take all your suggestions about the cheapest PAYG solutions into account. One of the downsides is no Skype but I have failed so far to persuade her to use Skype on her netbook. I also dont think RIM is dead yet there are a lot of loyal users.
3. If not I think either one of the Nokia Windows Phones or the Nexus might be good.
4. The Apple discussion was interesting and she may be getting an iPad from a rich sibling for Christmas, certainly easier to use than a netbook as you say boots up straight away. I am anti Apple myself but was mildly converted when I tried out the iPad certainly scores on simplicity and design.
Thanks again for everything, you are all great (if partisan and argumentative!)0
