runs inside your network, internet connection not required to RC.

Software firewalls can stop any remote control working, unless you open the port

Ooh I like this idea. So I can use this from home to save on my low internet allowance and one of the others mentioned above if I need access from work/ elsewhere?

No reason but Teamviewer allows external (and internal) or just internal , never used Logmein. I have also used VNC too. I also use Teamviewer on Linux and from Linux (I know VNC works there too but not sure about Logmein)

What do you mean by external /internal?
Do you mean internal= from within homegroup ie at home and external = from work etc?

    yes

Avast free antivirus also has remote control ability, but most of the across the net products require someone at both ends to startup/authenticate/read the random password (constant password can be set with teamviewer, but they change their version numbers very frequently, which means you have to make sure you have the latest version before trying to connect)

VNC looks good but can't tell if there's a free option like the others. Shame I've only got Win 7 home premium.

edit: actually it must be free as it just says " download". Do I go for zip or exe?

    all free

    exe,

you only need the viewer on the viewing machine, and the server on the machine to be viewed

Sorry external means e.g. I could connect from where I am (assuming you tell me the id and password for Teamviewer) as could you from anywhere in the world assuming you can get Internet access and you have set up Teamviewer with a static password , Internal I meant within your Network i.e. it does not go anywhere near the internet , sorry for being less clear:o

Thanks for your help. I'll give that a go then first as it won't go near the internet.

How do I open the port ( post further up)?

The install may open it up automatically if you are using windows firewall, try it first to see. Find out the local ip address of the machine you are connecting to using ipconfig.

otherwise it needs adding as an exception to the windows firewall, usually port 5900 by default.

Oh ok, so in a way in the long run this might be what I need overall.
I might download both and see which I prefer. They won't clash will they? About to download vnc first as that's where I was heading before I read your post.

They may fight over the TCP port they are using, but if you try each singly then no they shouldn't. Both (I think) have a tray icon on the right of your taskbar , so just click on that and exit it. Also with TV and VNC you can set them to start-up with windows or not, can't get to my VNC machine at the moment (it's in bits , changing some hardware , mind you it has been for 2 weeks ...note to self get on with it :rotfl:)
