Jury Duty

Hi

My husband has today received a letter saying he has to attend Jury duty in a few weeks. He has read through the forms which state he will be able to claim back loss of earnings up to £62 or thereabouts per day.

my husband earns more than this and we can't afford to lose the loss in wages especially coming up to Christmas and I am on redundancy notice.

Is there anything we can do to delay this? We know he has to do this service at some point but the timing at the moment isn't great.

  • some companies will pay during jury service, but basically you have to do it, like it or not, its an integral part of the legal system, and depends on all of us doing our bit

    Thank you for replies.

My husband will contact the court on Monday to explain the situation. If he does have to attend it could create financial difficulties for us.

The company I used to work for would make up the difference between what our pay was and the max that the courts would pay, so it might be worth checking his contract of employment or speaking to his employers. (Jury service was specifically mentioned in our contract)

It seems that just about everyone who is called for jury service doesn't want to do it whereas I would love to do it and have never been called.

Do you live near to the court?
Our court for jury service would take approx. 1hr to get to on public transport. For this reason I have been excused.
  • In the letter your husband received there is a deferal form with information.

    You can defer once only.
