    Full service usually means oil,filter ,fluids and "kick the tyres",you might be lucky and get plugs if it is petrol.I doubt fuel comsumption issues will be dealt with on a service ,that will need diagnostics

    reviews could have been done by some rival companies but this doesn't look good, probably just stick to a local garage. I usually go to my brother's friend one up the road but when I got a new exhaust, he fitted it too close to the back of the car which was why everything i let go of the clutch slowly, it was making a juddering noise.

    When I went to kwik fit they instantly told me it was the problem, so went back to my brother's friend garage told them of the problem and they fixed it. but they should of knew of that in the first place...

    Nope, no no one. I'm not sure on their experince level but I'm going to be shopping around to make sure I get the best.

    Then you need to do a bit of research to make sure you understand the basics at least. Just shopping round and seeing who has the most bullet points on their service list isn't the best way.

    Although I disagree with your attitude a fair bit, I still don't want you getting ripped off so here is a list of things that you should get done:

    1. Oil change with a new filter
    2. Air filter changed
    3. Spark plugs changed
    4. If not done, not documented and over the mileage (usually 70,000 or every 5 years), cambelt changed - this is critical but will increase the bill quite drastically (if not changed and it snaps your engine is dead leaving you to repair or replace)
    5. Brake fluid check, replacement if needed
    6. Brake disc / pads check and replacement if needed ALSO check handbrake isn't slack
    7. Tyres - checked and replaced ONLY if they are 1.6mm or below (be sure to see them before saying OK to replacement) - many garages will tell you they need replacing even when they don't so be careful here
    8. Alternator check - voltage while engine running should be about 13-14Volts
    9. Lights - check brake lights, headlights, reverse lights etc. Many mechies will tell you they've done this (when they haven't) so just get them to check them while you're in the driving seat with the engine running
    10. Gearbox fluid change - not always needed as some boxes are designed to run for life but I'd recommend it anyway.

    fiat punto, 1.2 petrol, 88,800 plus miles on the clock.

    While I agree that list looks comprehensive, some of the things on it are simply "look at the car and say yes its fine" type jobs. EG the wiper blades - just looking at them as you approach the car to drive it onto the ramps is a job done. Other things on the list are a licence for them to print money because you won't have a clue what they're on about, how they tested it or what they do to rectify it etc. Wheel alignment for instance is one of them. They charge £35 for that yet you would have no idea if its in or out because they use laser gauges to check it. The simple way to check it is take your hands off the wheel when driving along - if the car drifts sideways your tracking is out. If it doesn't its fine however kwikfits laser gauges can still find faults that will cost you money.

    I had a shock absorber replaced by KF a few years ago. Car failed its MOT the next month because it was loose - KF hadn't fitted it back in correctly.

    Full service = an oil change and a list of essential jobs that stop your car exploding in a huge fireball on the way home.

    Have you noticed your tyres and brakes are seriously worn. But you fitted them 3 weeks ago, Oh i must have the wrong person. Is that your xyz over there? Errr no thats your car i saw you go home in it yesterday.

    Do KwikFit supply shovels or do you have to bring your own?

    8. Brake disc / pads check and replacement if needed
    9. remove brake drums and clean and adjust (if fitted) ALSO check handbrake isn't slack
    10. Tyres - checked and replaced ONLY if they are 1.6mm or below
    11. Alternator belt and charge check - voltage while engine running should be about 13-14Volts
    12. full lighting check
    13. check screen washers (and headlight washers if fitted)
    14. check wiper blade condition
    15. check door locks lubricate and locking operation operation
    16. check window opening
    17. check seat belt operation
    18. check gearbox and axle levels
    19. check driveshafts & and bearings
    20. check body condition
    21. road test

    thats more or less what we would do on a full service ,price around £135.00 using good quality components ..

  • a punto is easy enough to buy a haynes manual and do the service yourself.

    oil

    oil filter

    fuel filter

    cabbin pollen filter

    spark plugs-check HT leads for splits and cracks and points rusting or corroded replace if need to, also check spark from coil pack replace coil pack if no spark in any lead (after HT leads checked).

    (if you havent a clue when the timing belt was done its overdue now)

    timing belt tensioner and idler.

    water pump.

    brake fluid check replace or top up if needed

    power steering fluid check replace or top up if needed. (exclude for EPS).

    brake pad check and rear shoe check via inspection windows on caliper and drum. replace low pads or shoes and worn discs.

    check wiper blade, and top up windscreen wash bottle.

    check coolant and antifreeze mixture top up or replace if low or wrong consisntancy.

    battery volatge and condition and battery points checked.
  • In October's Car Mechanics magazine, there is a well written, illustrated, five page article on servicing the Fiat Punto. They even grade the various tasks according to difficulty - most are reasonably straightforward.

    Most public libraries seem to subscribe to this magazine so, if you are a library member, you can save yourself the £4 purchase price.
