ellemm - I don't really remember learning to use a computer nor to use the internet. We had one since I was 3 (I'm 29) as my dad was/is a draughtsman and used it for work. I think he rented it at first cos it was too expensive to buy one. As for the internet, I was the first person in my class to get it! Again because of my dad. Never been a stranger to technology tho my mum was hopeless with computers lol. I remember when I was teaching her to use the computer. She had to write everything down in a book at first. She really hated them with a passion but ended up being able to powerpoint and do excel spreadsheets when she became a lecturer. I'm sure your OH will be whizzing around internet in no time.
Indie - Happy belated birthday! Hope you had a fab day!
Wingo - Hope your paperwork turns up soon

WORSE than that I get's home and go on my laptop to find my bt eamil had been hacked and BT had closed it down. The upshot of it all was that we both had a trojen on our laptops and it cost £160 for Microsoft to put them both right, it took and hour and a half to sort them both out. They said that windows 7 was vunerable to this and they have now installed C cleaner and when my nortan security expires they will put their security and we wont have to pay any more as its a one off payment to Microsoft and they will sort out any future problems we may have as well.
I have been beyond myself with worry but did not have a choice as they wouldn't reconnect my BT account until the problems had been resolved.
.
I may be wrong but it sounds like this:

If it is not please excuse my intervention.
It just seems that for the cost charged new copies of Windows could have been installed or for free the back up on the E drive could be used.
Not withstanding it gives us all a reason to make sure we back up our files now that external memory is so cheap eg: http://www.ebuyer.com/407410-samsung-500gb-m3-portable-external-hard-drive-hx-m500tcb-g
Eta: this is from Microsoft as further explanation........... http://www.microsoft.com/security/online-privacy/msname.aspx0 -
Omg I hadn't seen that before weeowens, I really hope Sylvia hasn't been scammed by them. I agree with you about using the free versions now, I've bought certain ones in the past which only made my pc worse so I downloaded free ones after that. I just use iPad nowadays as I need a new pc and so far (touch wood) I've had no probs on the iPad. (I still prefer a computer though!
)

Hi wingobins.Some like free AV but my experience with AVG put me off.
I now use Kaspersky.For about £16 I can protect three PCs for a year so it seems a small price to pay.
ETA: I bought my PC with no operating system so any issues just get solved via a reinstall as I have the Windows disc that I purchased at the the time: http://www.ebuyer.com/259862-microsoft-windows-7-home-premium-w-sp1-licence-and-media-1-gfc-02021
I use a PC very much like this: http://www.ebuyer.com/407540-zoostorm-desktop-pc-7873-1077
I back up all info to an external drive as they have got so cheap it seems the easiest way.
ETA: more info re BT closing accounts.............http://community.bt.com/t5/Other-BB-Queries/Email-about-closing-bt-Yahoo-account/td-p/5841110 -
