in Water bills
Hi Just been speaking to south west water about my bill. THey reackon that the water consumption we have showing is they'd expect for six people (there are three of us). So those south west customers out there, would you think that £70 a month on a water meter sounds right for a family of six? ta..

Yep, i would.
I live in a tiny terraced house with my 2 children and pay £55 a month.0 -
SWW is the most expensive water in the UK, so not unusual.
Are you being billed on actual or estimated readings? if the latter, when did you last submit a meter reading? No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Yep. £10 standing charge and £10/person would be my rule-of-thumb calculation, then some people are heavy on the water ... especially families. So not substantially unusual to be of note imho.0

Myself and my partner rent a two bed bungalow in SWW area and pay on average £40-50 a month.
Our usage is usually about 7 - 8 cubic metres per month.
I believe they say the average for a 2 person household is 6 - 8 cubic metres a month.
Inclusive of vat and standing charges, SWW customers on a meter are paying just shy of £6 per cubic metre for their water and sewerage. :eek:0 -
I think there was an actual meter reading recently eg the last couple of months so I will check my bill against the actual I think. I think I was a bit shocked because the SWW guys made me think that we were unusual in our water consumption and thought we were reasonably careful..0

Forgive me for saying if you already know this, but if your meter and the bill appear to tally up ok and you still think your usage seems excessive, the next logical step would be to check you don't have a leak on your supply pipe.
I check our meter at least once a month and compare the readings to check we're not using an excessive amount of water. I think checking it regularly also makes you much more concious of the amount you're using, hence making you think more before leaving taps running etc.
Every little helps when we're paying the highest water rates in the country!0 -
We pay around £35 and that's slightly over paying on what we use that's family of 3. We wash for five people though and wash weekly car may too with pressure washer or hosepipe I take regularly meter readings this is with York water0

We can only dream of paying those sort of rates down here!
My figure includes daily shower usually of no more then 4 - 5 minutes for each of us, washing machine on no more then twice a week and obvious daily use of toilet and bathroom / kitchen sinks. Baths are a very occasional treat. We never use a hose pipe, always use water butts for garden and washing car!
We shouldn't moan though, SWW always make us feel better about it with the usual we're paying to clean up the coastline story! :think:0 -
Well I have two water butts but height of summer they rarely full. We dont have daily showers but showers dont use much water well at least ours dont it has a attachment which uses less water came wit shower. Toilet also doesn't use much water. I know SW water are on of dearest. I live on coast too any YW are paying out to make water even cleaner than EU regulations and new one coming in0

I can't see to be honest why we should be penalised in this way (paying to clear up the coast line). We have the biggest coast line of any district with the least population. It's not as if we are the only people who visit the coast, the politicians are very quiet on the subject. Some sort of off setting should be applied accross the uk to smooth things out a bit... between 22 june and 25 sept we used 29 cubic metres of water for three so I am trying to find out what the average is ..0
