Looks like a decent machine, Anselm."There may be a legal obligation to obey, but there will be no moral obligation to obey. When it comes to history, it will be the people who broke the law for freedom that will be remembered and honoured." --Rt. Hon. Tony Benn0

I avoid Samsungs now. We had a lot of them in my old job and they tend to die just out of warranty.
I have two of the cheapest mono lasers that HP sell, they're about £80. One's 3 years old and still going strong. On the strength of that, I replaced my last dead samsung with another of the HP's. Recycled cartridges are about £10-12 on ebay and last ages.Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

I think it might be the luck of the draw, skivenov. We have a Samsung here that refuses to die, in spite of being several years old with a heavy workload. Compare that to my HP laser/scanner/fax which died just out of warranty."There may be a legal obligation to obey, but there will be no moral obligation to obey. Hmm actually thinking about my needs, I think it'll need to be wireless, mono laser, and possibly have a scanner built in, but maybe I could just buy a scanner cheap? I'm doing a law degree so there's lots of reading so I want to be able to scan pages for notes"Nothing, Lucilius, is ours, except time." - Seneca

Scratch that I'll buy a second hand scanner.
So to narrow it down, it needs to be mono laser with reasonable ink costs (for example I found a brother printer that had ink that cost £58 but they reckoned you could get 12,000 pages out of it.)
I don't mind paying for dear ink if I get a lot of pages out of it to be honest.
Thanks for all your help thus far though"Nothing, Lucilius, is ours, except time." - Seneca

What sort of printing allowance and costs does your deparment have? Way back in the day mine had good allowances but if you ran out you could top up hundreds or thousands of prints very cheaply. Scanning was free and photocopying counted the same as printing. Much quicker than a home machine too.
You might find you don't need one at all!Do you not know that a man is not dead while his name is still spoken?

My daughter has a HP LaserJet Pro M1132. She wanted scanner facilities to scan pages from books she borrows from the Uni library. Some of the books are high demand, which means that she can not keep them for any length of time. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Maplins currently have that handyscanner thing for £50 - I have one I bought last year and frankly so many people want to borrow it over the past year it has been a great investment. I still keep a sheet-feeding laser multifunction as when you have a pile of A4 to scan, you can't beat it, but for scanning books actually in the library you need one of these - VERY efficient way of working!!0
