Hi, I want to buy a printer to print out lecture slides etc.
I will be printing in only black and white, what type of printer is the best and can any of you give me a link to a printer that would suit my needs?
Much obliged.

If you are going to University then you need to save your money for important things like parties, gigs and generally having a good time.
On that basis the best printer is one that is free of charge.
So, if I were you, I would try your local Freecycle group in the first instance and see what you get offered.
Perhaps worth considering...0 -
If you only need b&w then a laser will have the cheapest running costs.
Think about whether you need a scanner, too, before you buy; an all-in-one might be your best option.I'm dreaming of a white Christmas.
But, if the white runs out, I'll drink the red.0 -
I bought a Dell 1320c colour laser about 2 years ago after using an HP Deskjet for a while.
The savings come from being able to buy 4 toners, that's 3 colour and 1 black for just over £20 from ebay. Both my partner and I are HE students and we don't really think about the cost anymore. We have a spare set of toners kept just in case and print what we need, as do the kids when they are wanting pictures to cut out.
I miss having a scanner once in a while but apart from that, for documents and slides it is unbeatable.
I'd go with a wireless version if I was buying now, but wired network is ok, or USB of course.0 -
I'd suggest a budget mono laser, Samsung make some excellent and compact ones, both USB and wireless.
You'll pay a little bit more, but you'll more than get your investment back in saving on inkjet carts within a year.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

Remeber the cheaper the printer, the dearer the inks (as a rule), so there are many false economies to be had in this arena.
For uni, seeing as you will probably skip some lectures and want to copy somebody elses notes, get a printer with a scanner and sheet feeder so you can use it as a photocopier/scanner with ease. Under £100 will get you a Panasonic multifunction networkable (should you so choose - and charge your housemates for printing!) mono laser printer/scanner with sheet feeder with enough starter toner for a couple of reams of paper, and a reasonable price (like £35 not £80) for replacement toners.
You will print a lot, you will have to hand in essays and projects, you won't want to be let down by a plasticky inkjet that takes forever and is meant for the odd photo here or there. Lasers are cheap, fast, reliable, waterproof, and effective. Spend the £100 now and it'll save you money when you really need it in the summer trying to hit all your hand-in deadlines whist friends are running to PCWorld trying to buy more £25 ink cartridges for their cheapo inkjets0 -
Wonder if you can find one of these ?

Freecycle is great, but don't even consider getting an inkjet printer, even if it is free. A set of replacement inks will likely cost more than a brand new printer.
A mono laser is the way to go and there are usually plenty to be had second hand because they're reliable and typically run for many years. They're relatively cheap to run even with genuine toner cartridges but you can save even more money by refilling them yourself."There may be a legal obligation to obey, but there will be no moral obligation to obey. When it comes to history, it will be the people who broke the law for freedom that will be remembered and honoured." --Rt. Hon. Tony Benn0 -
Find someone who studies in the computer science department.. they often get huge free printer allowances (we did!)0

Do you think this one would be good?
