Agree with the above. The best cheap, crisp-packet diesel is the MK3 mondeo with the TDDi engine (Duratorque with conventional electronicaly controlled manual injector pump; no common-rail nonsense); 2002ish models now well under a grand.

Although I'd still spend the money on a 90s BMW. There are a lot of mid to late 90's 5-series with the old 6-pot diesel that's admittedly a little underpowered but absolutely indestructible. Just an example:

Im stuck on the badge.... After they said its the BMW TeDiouS. I wouldnt buy one..

Nothing wrong with a TDCI. I bought one. Its buying the right car, Not a problem one traded in because the previous owner didnt want to fix it properly or couldnt fix it properly.

  • Have to agree- I went from a Honda Civic to Vauxhall Astra and it was permiership to Div 3. You never appreciate Japenese build quality and design until you are no longer driving it.

This is why I like the Rover 400/45 so much. Jap parts, jap build. Plus no jap scene tax :p
  • One of the best bangers I had was a 95 Omega 2.5 with the same 6 pot diesel as the aforementioned 5 Series BMW. Good reliability and fuel economy and silky smooth.
