Depends how good you are at haggling.0 -
I LOVED my Mark IV Astra OP. Had a 52-plate 1.6l 8V Club and only sold it a few months ago (had done 112,000 miles; I owned it from 80,000 miles).
Fab little workhorse. We do a lot of UK holidays and on its last big trip with us we drove from Essex to the Orkney Islands and back.
Dirt cheap for repairs. Never had any problems with it (only had to do wear and tear stuff). Design doesn't look as dated as some other cars from the same period (IMO).
Also has a brilliant sized boot relative to the size of the car.
Worth going for one with FSH if you can, and that looks like it's been loved. Got a mechanic friend who said they'll do 200,000 miles if they've been looked after.0 -
I've had two Mk4 Astras 2.0 16v SRi and a 2.0T Coupe. Both great motors.
I drive a 53 reg Vectra 2.2 SRi now. Wish I still had the Coupe tbh.0 -

A brand I would not touch with the largest barge pole known to man ...always seen them a a very poor man's ford.Hate and I do mean Hate my apple Mac Computer - wish I'd never bought the thing
Do little and often
Please stop using the word "of" when you actually mean "have" - it's damned annoying :mad:0 -
Have to agree- I went from a Honda Civic to Vauxhall Astra and it was permiership to Div 3. You never appreciate Japenese build quality and design until you are no longer driving it.0

Well, we put a deposit down on an immaculate Astra 1.6l LS 04 plate with 85,000 on the clock. 7 service stamps. £1495 so I think (hope) we got a bargain. Tried to get some discount on the basis we were paying cash but instead he offered to MOT it for one year, making any repairs if needed, and tax it for 6 months. It is very very clean with no chips/dings. A couple of wee scuffs but that's all. Best of all - 'normal' tyres. No more low-profiles for me thank you very much! I got sick of replacing my low-profiles on my last 2 cars - puncture after puncture, and expensive too. We'll go back and get it tomorrow or Sunday and we'll be a two car family until we sell the Fiesta!0

We looked at a Civic but in our price range, it was pretty dire. Lots of CR-Vs on the road today though!0 -
£600 for 1997 Vectra? It's about £500 too dear..0

look up autotrader £600 seems reasonable and you could get newer for less.0

The only cheap Eurobox manufacturer who even comes close to being a safe bet as the cars get older is Ford -- and even then only the newer ones, the old Escorts etc were diabolical.
Had a Vectra many years ago, worst car I've ever owned. Those Ecotec engines are absolute, unmitigated cobblers -- they make the Rover K-series seem like a paragon of reliablity by comparison.0
