Unknown Deposit in Account - Hfx say no error

Evening all
If someone could put my mind at rest that would be fantastic.
Short version - checked my account on line and a deposit was made end of September at a local branch (it is my branch).
I didn't make the deposit. Rang the service center who said they'd contact the branch and someone would contact me.
They rang today and said it was a cheque deposited into my account. I didn't deposit the cheque - I asked them to double check as I wasn't expecting the deposit and wasn't the person who made the deposit.
They have said it is all correct - but couldn't tell me who the cheque was from.
How can someone deposit a cheque into my account - If it is an error (like I believe), how can I escalate this?
I have visions of some poor soul not having their money that is sitting in my account. Or is this not possible?

Leave it in your account and don't touch it, whoever put it there might notice in a couple of months and request it back.
It could be something as simple as a single digit wrong on the account number. Either by the operator, or by the person filling in the paying in form.0 -

They should be able to tell you who the drawer of the cheque is. If they can't or won't give you this information ask them to provide you with a photocopy of the cheque - the only possible disadvantage to this is that they could possibly try to charge you for providing a copy.
It could be that the money was meant for you and you have a fairy godmother - although it would have to be one who knew your account details!3 stone down, 3 more to go0 -
Maybe someone's trying to frame you for something... make you look like a hit-man for the mob or a money launderer.
But definitely try and find the origin if possible and doesn't cause a lot of expense to you.
Sorry but I was watching Breaking Bad. Love Saul.0 -

Were you expecting a tax refund by any chance?0

your bank can get a copy of the cheque and also details of the bank/branch where it was paid in.
If the cheque is made out to you, I suppose you could contact whoever wrote it out to find out why. If the cheque is not made out to you then your bank could be in trouble - they are responsible for ensuring the payee and the account holder are in the same name.
I'm very nosey - would you mind letting us know what happens ?0 -

Hmm - I am expecting a tax refund (my children paid tax on their savings as I hadn't completed a form) but I didn't think it was that value (was expecing a lot less).
Also it was put in "over the counter" according the woman on the phone, who couldn't tell me who the cheque was from (it had gone to processing). She said they can will check in a few days and has promised to ring me back.
I just don't get how they can do it without my bank details.
I'll let you all know how I get on (ideas of fraud and wondering how they got my details) were making my mind wander a bit.0 -
The cheque itself will have gone back to the issuers bank but your bank should have a copy of the paying in slip that was used when it was given over the counter... ask for a copy of that.
Liklihood is that its bad handwriting/ keying error and its someone elses money that has gone into your account and it will be reversed out in the next few weeks/ months0
