Really?! I have a normal UPVC door (with a handle) that opens straight into my hallway (no porch, nor any hint of a porch). I thought it was pretty normal!

I would not be happy about my postman doing this at all. However, they would be quite unwise/brave to try as my dogs are very vocal when the postie comes to the door. I would be LIVID if the postman opened my front door and this allowed one of my dogs to escape. I keep the front door locked at all times to avoid the risk of such things happening. I'm really not keen on the possibility of the postman seeing me in a towel either!

Surely trying the handle is a strange thing to do; if the occupier is out, the door would (should) be locked so trying the handle would be pointless. If the occupier is in, give them a chance to get to the door and knock very loudly if necessary. Maybe shout through the letterbox if no repsonse?! If the occupier is in, why would they need/want to open the door? It would scare the life out of me!

not really, some on the properties like the OPs have a locking door at the top of the stairs
So often the bottom door can be unlocked through the day
I once had an RD for a house where the lower door was ajar, yet nobody came down
So card left on the stairs

I have a white upvc door with a handle that opens directly onto my stairway. If the door is locked the handle won't go down at all, if it's unlocked it will depress, I wonder if the OPs is like this, he maybe assumed that if the door was locked no one was home.

I don't understand why we would have a locking door inside the house?? I don't think I've seen internal locks in any houses anywhere before (except bathroom doors and student bedrooms)

I can only tell it like it is
they have a locking door at the top of the stairs, treating the stairs more as a hallway to the front door
Same as many folks having a porch with a locking door, then another locking door inside
  • The only front doors I have ever seen with a door handle, have a porch. I really don't see the problem. I wish we had one so we never missed parcels.

Where do you think these doors lead to?

Sounds strange - so they'd have to unlock themselves from upstairs to get to the lounge of grab a cuppa from the kitchen.. and they lock themselves upstairs for bed at night?

no,the door at the top of the stairs is the entrance to the whole flat.
the lower level is another flat, with an entrance of its own
so it looks like a house but is two flats

Oh - I'm with you now! I suppose our property could be like that, but it's an actual house. My OH's mother actually has an arrangement in with her postman where he puts parcels in their workshop, but I've never met our postman (and don't even think we have the same one from one day to the next at the moment)... so still not sure what made the postman believe he could attempt to access a stranger's property.

  • We used to live in a house with a UPVC door and it's a house that is clearly not flats and had no porch. I was in the house once and postie knocked. I got up from the couch and before I'd even reached the door, he had opened the door, thrown the parcel on the stairs and slammed it shut. I was gobsmacked. I was only a youngish teen at the time so didn't even think of telling my mum or complaining lol but I do remember thinking how weird it was! I poked my head out the door straight away too and he was dashing off round the corner so it was clear he knew he'd been naughty. Always kept the door locked after that!
