I wasnt commentating on your choice rather the CK assertion of cheap.
What I meant by cheap, was cheaper than up here, which is getting to be as expensive as London now.
I'm also with Pastures' choice of where to live, as it's a lovely part of the country (although I've not worked out exactly where). I am only up here as I need quick, easy access to London, and when I bought, it was a larger house for same money.
Sorry if I've inadvertently offended anyone.

Micheals I did something MSE today. Not sure I went as far as savvy shopping. I did not ugrade my iPhone but reduced my tariif from £36+ to £15+.
Still a lousy signal at home though. I have to buy some box for £100 and all will be well they told me.
Vodafone are very stingy about handing out sure signal boxes - on point we had 2 relatively expensive contracts with them and could get virtually no signal at home but they still refused to give us one for free.
£15 is good although I never pay more than £2 quid a monthI think....0 -

I can't bear the thought of a contract.
I put £5 on my phone as PAYG about every two months and luckily as my phone's bigger than my last dinky one I can actually text on it with my clumsy fingers.
Have got some free books on it and signed up withe cloud so I can use internet from the pub. There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -
@michaels - so how do I do this savvy shopping stuff? I'm coming to the UK in June/July (when the Ashes series is on of course) and need/want the following:
- Shirts from Lewins
- Suit(s) from Austin Reed or nicer (not M&S as their suits are terrible IME)
- Shoes from a small shop on the edge of the City
- Some bits from Lakeland
- Clothes for the Missus and the kids from M&S/Next/Gap/[insert mid-market clothing store of choice]
- Maybe a few bits from Selfridges depending on whether their sale is on
I'll probably also get 1 or 2 cheap mobile phones with SIMs rather than getting a $1200 bill like last time I visited!!!!!0 -

I have a SIM-only contract. Its probably the least MSE thing that I pay out for. I pay £20.42 (or something around there), and get more texts than I can use in month, 600 cross-network anytime minutes and unlimited data. For a long time (many years) I mainly just used the minutes (for calling parents), but now I use the data too when I'm out and about. I'm sure I could get a better deal if I tried, but everything else is pretty MSE'd so I can't be bothered.0 -

Forgive me if I'm wrong Pastures, aren't you in a relatively cheap part of the country?
One bedroom rate up here is £126 a week, but going into certain parts of London can be moving on for £200 a week:eek:. This is the equivalent to 2.5 days a week, without the person in question having to lift a finger.
:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:
The best way to have it would be to implement a similar system, which as far as I can see, would give more of an incentive to work (say, 20 hours at NMW total).
Many employers down these parts will give a minimum of £18kp/a (which is our starting point) to someone with a years experience on a basic level, meaning that to stay down these parts, there's huge incentive to work.
I can't see it happening for the forseeable, though.
In other news, I've ordered my new car today, and I get it on September 1st

The other side of the coin is that the minimum wage (for adults) is set at a level you can actually live on. That means there really is no excuse for sitting about and claiming the dole here.0 -

I can spend quite a lot of time on the phone - my mum likes to chat most days and I think my parents' phones must be incoming calls onlyI do get 3% back via Santander, so I save more by paying that bit extra, right? (Only joking!)
Just checked and I get 800 mins. I managed to go over that once :eek:0 -

Turned out Talkmobile Essentials PAYG was cheaper, 4p per text, 8p per minute and 25p per day for internet use. Always use wifi when I'm anywhere so it lasts for ages.
I was tempted by two other tariffs Ovivo (free) and Vectone (£1 per onth) but put off by the fear they might go out of business and there seems to be some doubt that you'd be able to save your number (and it's the easiest to remember number I've ever had or seen so I'd hate to lose it). There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0
