I agree LIR, but we can't take the risk with James' joints, last year he had a bad dislocation which required hospital treatment (95% of his dislocations don't) just walking from the school door to the car, let alone the 3 miles to school. During the current weather, he is not allowed for safety reasons to cross site (a far less distance) but youngest will be doing it.
I suppose some see James as being 'normal' as he doesn't make a huge thing out of his joints dislocating, some with slightly better joints than him already have claims in for DLA and use wheelchairs because of the risk of dislocations (not joints actually dislocating on a regular basis) but we tend to be made of sturdier (or is that just stubborness) stuff. We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -

While out I felt better so collected my car. Because it was covered with snow there was no ice ( hurrah) so took about seven swipes of my arm to clear windscreens ( I admit I left roof snow, which it naughty).
Now home, put a chilli in the oven for the others tonight and have drawled back up to relax.
As long as you did all the windows and the lights and indicators then I wouldn't complain - the number of people who seem to think using the wipers to clear that part of the windscreen whilst leaving the wing mirrors, side windows, remainder of windscreen, all lights and indicators covered in snow is acceptable terrifies me especially with slippery roads you need as much notice as possible of people slowing/turning. On Friday I had someone pull out of a side road in front of me - no doubt they didn't see me coming as they hadn't bothered to remove the snow from the side window...I think....0 -
Its a bit different when you work in a lab and are in the middle of an experiment!
I wasn't suggesting that Misskool should not go, just that as it seems likely there is a lot of expense involved the department should contribute. I think that's reasonable.
Edit: Ah I see the misunderstanding. I said "Surely, this is a matter for your manager to, umm, manage? Give him the problem to sort out!" I meant he should manage the travel situation for Misskool and help her out, not manage without her and let the experiment go to pot.No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -

Yep, windows and lights and numberplates. I sometimes do not do my back side windows, because it's like driving a van. Once the dogs start breathing they are lost anyway. By rear view window goes down, I drive like that with the dogs, better visibility, but colder.0 -

I cleared the entire car including the roof, lights etc!
To be honest, I love clearing the snow off the roof, makes me feel like a god of snow, throwing a big, unformed snow ball :rotfl:We made it! I misunderstood you too then! :rotfl:
From my experience of Uni research I don't think it would be very likely that there would be any financial contribution available - worth a try though and I would definitely let people know if I had such travel limitations (not much you can do if the trains aren't running). Sometimes there are small pockets of money which can be tapped into.
I think the best bet would be hoping that a friendly colleague who had made it in could do enough to salvage the experiment/ try to get a lift from the closest friendly colleague.0 -
The school run was fine once I was out on the main roads, digging the car out and getting to the main road not so fun or fine but we did it.
Grrr, just been told on Facebook I should have made the boys walk to school this morning, not once but twice and both of them know James' joints dislocate....would like to see them walk 3 miles with constantly dislocating joints in the snow.
Such a shame that someone on Facebook should make such a comment without understanding why the boys would never manage or be expected to walk three miles to school.
They just opened their mouth before putting their brain into gear. I bet they would cringe if they knew the true facts.
You are certainly not looking for sympathy and neither are your boys, but a little understanding and compassion goes a long way.0 -
I'm listening to radio four about the horse eat thing and getting cross about the idea our equine passports are really realistic catch all for stopping 'bute' ( phenylbutazone) entering food chain. Seriously......this stuff gets handed out and shared around yards. I am not saying its right, but. Am saying it happens, almost without exception. But not totally.0

SC which airline should we be boycotting? BA do not seem to have covered themselves in glory this time - last year they cancelled everyhting and it seemed to work OK but I guess that is so expensive they hoped to get away wiith things this time?
I know this family has VI in BA, but to be fair a substantial amount of the blame should fall not with any airline, but with BAA. Planes of any airline can take off and land providing the conditions are safe to do so. This involves a lot of time and effort on the part of the airport. To be fair to BAA, they have invested heavily in this area. Gatwick, under new ownership, has fared substantially better though.
Of course a big problem at Heathrow is that it works at full capacity, so in the event that it takes longer to get planes off the stands, or deice, or any other thing that is a problem in such weather conditions, then planes start to stack up. The solution of that would of course be to build another runway, or better still, another premium hub airport. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Mr G your feelings of 'guilt' demonstrate you clearly have a caring side however your decision is made, you made it for your family and thus it was the right one; don't beat yourself up about it. Is this the first time you have ever had to 'let someone go'?
I've had to sack people before. TBH, the only time I've found it hard is when I've made people redundant as in that case they've done nothing wrong.
Sacking people is easy really as there is a good reason for it.0
