    Hi michaels,

If your daughter reads music, Herts libraries have a really good selection of piano music and your daughter is of the age where she will be able to reserve free of charge.

Here's a link to the searchable bit of the website:
    https://herts.spydus.co.uk/cgi-bin/spydus.exe/MSGTRN/OPAC/COMB

Page down and select "music score" from the collection box. If you want to just see what's in the local library, you can select a location from the pull-down box.

    Thanks LIR.

Actually she has already done recorded for a year a school which seemed like a good thing to have first as she learned the notes, how to read music etc. She has carried on with recorder this year even though only last year was free and started the piano. She is desperate to learn the violin but that is a screech to far for me, the piano she can turn the volume down or wear her headphones although actually it sounds ok anyway. We also got her a guitar cos I think it is a great 'social' instrument to play but I think learning more than 2 instruments at once might be too much of a challenge (and is definitely too expensive).

i just wish I was able to help her more with any of them.

    Thanks also Viva

Another edit - does anyone know any good free software that would let her type her tune in to the computer, play with it (I bet there is a technical term for this) and print it?
    I think....

I am software phobic, Otherwise I would be making my own music with it:rotfl:

Let her get established in the piano, get a couple of exams under her belt. Violin is a mean instrument IMO. It puts a lot of strain on the body (I do not miss it at all) but it calls to so many because it is extraordinary when played well. It might be that if she knows this is just a leisure pursuit for her at about grade five or six with the piano she could drop that for violin?

If she is gonna play with the guitar that's great. It might be that at the stage she might have gone for violin some classical guitar lessons might be in order. Classical guitar is a great foundation for other musical genres, a beautifully portable instrument and beautiful sounding too. (and certainly easier on the ear below reasonable proficiency than a squeaky wailing violin:D). But if it calls to her.....l.

Is there a good performing arts resource centre/library too in your area viva?

Not all people have a talent for music, but all can learn to appreciate beautiful sounds. Challenging our own tastes and developing our appreciation is a good thing, it doesn't diminish our favourites but can add to our appreciation of how they are part of a musical social history and how, for example, you can hear hints at the beginnings of 'today's' music in yesterday's and even glimses in the music of the day before yesterday.

Edit: on this point, even as a child I hated the carnival of the animals, I thought it contrived and not terribly clever, but it's the accepted way to give young people an idea of the range of an orchestra, and the music is very visual. Why the skeletons are ina carnival of the animals I don't know. But.....a good cheap way to spend an afternoon with young people (having read the liner notes forst parents....ID your animals and instruments in advance!)

Is it a vaguely numerate subject as we are really struggling to recruit at the moment?

Honest answer is no. Polished answer is he has A level maths and his first degree involved some statistics.

He is hoping the internship will lead to something, if not I'll post with a more polished answer.

You need to click on the "go advanced" button on the reply field here and then click either the icon that looks like a postcard or the one that looks like a globe behind a paperclip and post your photbucket code in that box.

He could probably get a job as a 'quant' with an investment bank with his qualifications. If he's frugal he could retire in 5 years. A starting salary of $250,000 for a really good and suitable stats PhD isn't unheard of. With his qualifications he should start on about $50,000-80,000 and expect an absolute minimum of the same again in bonuses. After a year that would be more like $150,000 base and up to $500,000 including bonus. Year 3 or 4 could well see $1,000,000 in total flowing into silvermoped's bank account if things go well.

It's not challenging work as such but it is a challenging environment and a few years doing that could set him up for life to do something fun.

    ETA I do mean $ not £.
