Drivers not knowing how to use a ford

I'd say if it's not an emergency and it's someone trying to use them as a free recover service - why not?

When it comes to fording, the main rule is simple - proceed with caution, and if you're not confident the crossing is at a safe depth, back up and find another way. There's nothing to stop you sticking your head out the window to look how far up your car it's going.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

There is even a sign showing the depth of water and they still try to drive through it.
But they are following the satnav and that hasn't told them to read the sign...:D

David - you said a "walkable mile and a half"; is there a footbridge? Or does your walk include shoes off and trousers rolled up? If you can walk it - why are you bothered about the ford being closed to road traffic?
I need to think of something new here...

I have a really cheap and nasty ebuyer sat nav and it's... er... quite creative in its directions from time to time. "Speed camera 56400 yards ahead, take note".... Riiight! :p
I tend to spend large parts of a journey ignoring it.

I would think that depends on what the purpose of the journey is. If he's, say, picking up a spare piano or something, walking it that far might be somewhat impractical. ;)

Don't drive into it when it's 3ft deep, but when the water is only a couple of inches deep you'll be fine.

And if you see a white van or 4x4 coming speeding in the opposite direction allow them to go first, regardless of if you think you have priority!

I was going to say, surely a sign to warn road users is all you need? If the council are that bothered, put a fancy one up that flashes no entry/ford closed when the water's more than a foot deep. In today's modern age, you can't tell me that can't make something totally automated that would do that job?

Besides, how difficult is it? If it looks too deep, don't drive through it.

Wouldn't it be easier/lower tech to put markings on the road and a sign that says something along the lines of "if you can't see 5 depth markers, ford is too deep to cross, recovery fee of £500 applies".

Same here - After a year of deliverring Vauxhalls and two months of owning one, I finally, by accident, found out how you turn the interior light on :D

I live rurally and bought a 4x4 Landrover discovery to cope with the snow and ice and the floods we regularly have.

During the recent flooding the police closed several roads and would not let me through, despite the fact that I could easily pass safely, precisely because of the numpties who don't know how to drive through deep water and were getting stuck. Grrrrrrrr. These were not huge deep floods, but depths of no more than 12 inches or so.

Mine's brilliant ;) When I'm approaching the Woolwich Ferry it says "Warning: Ferry" in case I haven't spotted the barriers, marshals in hi-vis, huge ramps and big blooming river in the way!
I need to think of something new here...
