I would put pressure on them re: the VT, 14 days should be enough time for them to arrange collection of the vehicle. If they haven't collected the vehicle prior to the 12th, I would make the payment rather than risk adverse credit on my credit profile for the next 6 years.

I can't get the number for the VT, they just keep saying they will contact me, so I'm just sending emails to customer services address asking when they will be in touch

Send a letter recorded delivery as opposed to email or phoning.

I cant speak for Santander, but I know of VT's that have taken only a few days to arrange, so hopefully they will have collected it prior to the 12th...

Just thought of a nother question, if I didnt have the car serviced lastyear, will they try and charge me for that?

Also I've just paid for 6 months tax, can I claim that back or does it go with the car?

Not sure is the answer but I would think they may have a claim for the service as it its part of the upkeep of the vehicle.

As for tax, I think you can claim the tax back but it must have a valid MOT.

Hi, I have just VT,d my last car, finance wasn't with Santander but with another lender, I sent them a letter asking to VT they were very prompt in relying and within 10 days they had manheim auctions out to inspect the car and take it away, only fault they found was scruffy on the front 2 alloys. They wanted to charge me 55 each wheel plus vat, the car had stone chips a few scratches but was a 56 plate, nothing major. Car was taken away and auctioned the week after ( I put a search on manheim auction site to tell me when it was going through, don't know how much it went for though). The lender then sent me a letter confirming the account has been settled, I asked them for a reciept for the work they were going to do to the alloys, they couldn't provide one so waived the 110 plus Vat. So all in all a very good experience.
Reson I was VT,ing was car was in negative equity and an extortionate interest rate, I had already paid more than I bought the car for and it would have made at least 2k at auction. So. Lender didn't get as much as they would have if I had paid the full term, but they will still have made 3k on top of sale price. Went out the week later and got another car on finance with a top rate, no problems getting the finance whatsoever. Hope this helps
  • I would cash in the tax before letting the car go. It's extra money in your pocket as the car doesn't have to be taxed to VT it. If the car has a valid MOT on the day of handing over, you don't need to MOT it either. Neither do you have to service the vehicle.
