Don't Android phones manage wifi connections on their own? I.e., it wouldn't make any difference to battery life if you just left wifi switched on all the time, regardless of whether you're in sight of a wifi hotspot or not? On my iPhone I can just leave wifi switched on permanently as it doesn't effect the battery life if its switched on but not in use.

Unless you install specific apps (eg Juice Defender), Android phones do not manage Wifi of their own. Any smartphone (Anroid or iOS) will search for wifi signal if wifi is switched on. This will drain battery.
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.

I've tried with and without and haven't noticed any difference in battery drain. I would have thought you're more likely to drain your battery by turning wifi off and inadvertently using 3G when wifi is actually available.
