  • They said there was going to be a shortage of eggs too and so everyone started panic buying which caused a shortage for about 2 weeks.... then everything went back to normal.

Regarding GYO, I do exactly that for many years on my lotty, but don't do it for cost reasons as you will save very little.

The time you need to sink into this need to be taken into account and put a price on, there are all the other initials that might take a while to show a return. And then there is the pests and the unstable weather of the UK.

Do it if you want to eat organic and have better tasting veg, if it's for the economics I wouldn't bother and simply stick to something like Aldie's excellent 5 veg weekly deal.

well I don't buy a great deal of bacon as a rule as I only eat it now and again, but I have found the tiny chopped up bacon bits in Tescos a 500gm packet last time I bought it was 74p and I divided it up into three chunks and if I need some for a quiche or an ommelette for example then I get a chunk out and defrost it and cook it to a crisp.More than enough for me as I live alone.I like crispy bits in pasta or soup as well.No doubt it will rise in price as well but I shall just stop buying it if it gets too expensive and buy something else to replace it.I know potatos will rise along with a lot of root veg and if I see some that aren't too dear or reduced then I will buy, boil, mash and freeze in ice cream sized scooped balls.More than enough for me.Its families that I feel for as spud is sometimes a greater part of their staple diet and not everyone has a garden or space to grow stuff

JackieO we do the same with that bacon, and it is enough to just add a bacony flavour to a 2 person portion of tomatoey pasta sauce or as you say in a quiche or omlette for 2. If you have other flavours you don't need a lot of bacon, and it is a good way to make OH think it's 'meaty' - she has a bit of a mental block against eating veggie meals too often, so I try to stretch the meat we do eat when possible!

May just have to pick up one or two extra 'regular' meat things next time I'm in the shop - things like sausages and pork chops... I normally try to wait until I find them with yellow stickers, but a few full price ones now might save a bit in the future!
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!

    .

My experience is completely opposite. I only buy a few carrots in a whole year and my small allotment of 8 x 60 feet produces enough organic veg to feed two of us for a whole year. I de- hydrate produce for winter and I brine or preserve in other ways. I save at least £850 a year on veg based on the fact that we had the £16 weekly riverford box and eat 7-8 a day. Everything is in place on the allotment and I use a lot of old seed, carefully stored. I generally spend maybe £20 at most, per year. Prior to the allotment, I grew a lot in bags and all sorts of planters at home and greens are cost effective

re the coming veg costs: I personally have a rolling programme of cabbages and greens, enough to supply us well until may. The worst time will be feb to may as we get into hungry gap time. I don`t see a shortage of greens here, nor parsnips or swedes. Potatoes will be in short supply and carrots but other veg will substitute well. The grain crops surrounding us here are down and the burners are going much more this season, as stored wheat is being dried. Grain futures are well up so costs will rise, however preppers will already have sussed that and will have stores in place

Any idea on the time frame this will be happening in?

Within the next 2 months or so. Obviously, with the root veg it will start to gradually creep up within weeks.

  • I have been building up my stock cupboard big time in the last year, mainly because of the benefit cuts that are coming, so that I already have a buffer against that. I will buy more meat as and when I can afford it. I have also heard that the soya crop has been affected badly, so anything like quorn or beanfeast will double in price as well.
It looks like 2013 is going to be a miserable year for a lot of people especially for those on benefits or low paid

Costs of food may go up but there will be other things i will be cutting down on before i start cutting down on good nutritious food.

For a start, the crisps will go as well as the chocolate bars (for packed lunches) and i'll cut down on cleaning products as well as our after dinner desert on a weekend. I buy a lot of flavoured water too. That will have to go.

went to Mr T's today for some dried mixed herbs, just their value range, and guess what they are up in price from 19p to 99p!! where is the justice in that?? the tub is a little bigger30g instead of 18g, but I would rather they kept the tub smaller and the price lower. how can they justify such a huge price hike on on item, needless to say I won't be throwing them willy nilly into everything I cook from now on! have herbs suddenly become scarce or something??
