Cost Of Food Set To Soar

The other thing that I think should be outright boycotted is "baby" veg, it's a complete waste of resources to be harvesting produce at the immature stage just so it looks cute. It also tastes of less and has less nutritional value most of the time when another few weeks in the same field would double the yield and increase the overall flavour and nutrition. Just don't buy it!
That's so true! I never really thought about it in terms of resources etc (just don't buy it as it is expensive) but you really have a point there.

Hi All--
I'm new to this thread but not to the forums. I usually follow the "preparing for winter" thread the most.
I live in the US, in New York State about 5 hours northwest of New York City.
Food prices have gotten very expensive here as well. Lamb is not very popular in this area and only certain "cuts" are routinely available. It is very costly (5 quid for 500 gm).
I haven't heard of soaring prices on pork or root veggies here yet but surely could happen. OH loves his potatoes so I shall stock up on the instant forms just in case.
They are all predicting severe weather-- cold and lots of snow here this winter. I hope our gasoline (petrol) doesn't increase too much more.
I am enjoying this forum very much. I love to hear about your lives "across the pond" and I'm very happy to share about my life here in America as well.0 -
Welcome kmiller we love to have views from other places in the world.
I bought some Brussels sprouts and parsnips on the market today both were 80p a 1lb, but at least I have my veg for Christmas day, I have already pre roasted a tray of potatoes and have them in the freezer so Christmas dinner is more or less sorted.
I also planted some late cabbage and some potatoes in a couple of tyres stacked up which acts as an insulator and I have plenty of garden fleece, so I should have some home grown spuds at Christmas.
I don't think that we will feel the real cost of the crop failures this year but next year will be a tough oneBlessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

An Asda shopper was charged £527 for two 'reduced price' pork chops, after an error with the self-service tills. She paid up, after forgetting her glasses, and was only refunded four days later.

Have to say I totally approve of the supermarkets dropping their "beauty pageant" standards. It's always been ridiculous that fruit and veg have to be of a unniform size and shape and that tens of thousands of tonnes per year of produce gets dumped because it's not quite perfect to look at. I don't mind smaller apples, different sizes of carrots, lumpy spuds, it's all the same nutritionally after all.

It's the fault of the supermarkets that the fruit & veg are a uniform shape and size because space equals money. Financially, this practice is unfair to the growers and the consumers.
I never buy 'baby' veg because I think it obscene that it's harvested early rather than being allowed to grow to full size. I cant remember when I last saw a really big swede or cabbage.0 -
I too find it absurd that good food is dumped because the supermarkets think folk won't by a bendy carrot.Trust me I don't give a flying fig if a carrot is straight or beny I just want to be able to buy vegatables for eating.its a bit like the 'bashed about tins' that get reduced I have friends who would never dream of buying a tin with a dent in it I don't care if its cheaper I will buy it dent or not I am not going to eat the tin ,only whats inside it.I bought some runner beans today from my local greengrocers and they were reduced because the ends were a bit bent !!! I was happy to pay 25p for almost a lb of them ,I brought them home topped, tailed and cut them up and they are in a bag in my freezer and will do me as a side veg for several meals.
I think we should have a campaign to bring common sense back to the shops .Food is far too expensive to dump just because it doesn't 'fit' the formula of neatness for the supermarkets .better still if you can find a greengrocer then go there instead.I bought a garlic bulb at the same time which cost me 15p in the supermarket it would have cost three times that and been wrappped in a pretty net as well I am not eating the net so I will carry one using my local shop instead.
(monday mornings) they do reduced bananas at 4 for 30p and they are fine in a banana custard or mashed up for babana bread.Just because the skins are turning a littl bit spotty and are not greeny/yellow and hard as a bullet0 -

It's indicitive of the arrogance and obnoxious power of the supermarkets when they refuse to listen to their customers who would prefer to pay a couple pennies less for misshapen fruit and veg. For goodness sake, it doesn't need to LOOK perfect. We're only going to eat the stuff, not admire it's beauty.0 -

I havent got a kindle....its not a necessity for me... but for people do have one, its good to see they can pick up some free stuff to read..
I think due to the poo summer this year, some supermarkets are 'relaxing' the fruit and veg criteria, so they will be selling 'wonky' carrots etc, the sad thing is, its not down to common sense, its down to the supply and demand etc...
why dont they sell the unusual shaped veg etc, and just bring the price down a bit??? THIS WOULD BE A WIN, WIN SITUATION...we would get cheaper food, the growers will not be left with food to rot in the ground, and the supermarkets will make some sort of profit too..Work to live= not live to work0 -
Even though I take advantage of the Aldi super six, I supplement it by buying fruit and veg from the market, you can actually smell the produce, there is no smell from the plastic bags that they insist on using in supermarkups and you can still get wonky vegBlessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light
