Galaxy S3 protection against collapse - resetting

Still flitting between the idea of an S3 & an iPhone 4S/5 & looking at various factors.
My iPhone 3Gs recently had a bit of a fit & it required putting into DFU mode & resetting/updating from there. Job sorted.
If the S3 has a bit of a meltdown, is there something similar to bring it back to life?
There was something else i wanted to find out about the S3 vs the iPhone, but i've gone & forgotten what it was
EDIT: I think i've remembered the other one - with iPhone, Apple got a little upset if you jailbroke it & required the phone repairing.
There's a game i want which isn't available on Android. I hear their 'rooting' is similar to Apple's 'jailbreaking'. On the back of this, do Samsung (or anyone repairing) get upset if the phone has been 'rooted' in the way Apple do?

Rooting will technically void your warranty, however it can be removed without a trace for warranty purposes.
As for the 'collapse' protection, yes. You can boot to recovery to reset the phone.0 -
You generally don't have to root an android as it does what jail breaking does for an iPhone out the box. You can enter a service mode with the samsung but also you can just pop the battery out

Minor point but is *MAY* be removable, if the phone has failed in a way it can't be un-rooted / flashed then traces will be left and warranty refused (been there, done that, Thanks Vodafone...)0 -
Thanks for the replies. So undecided on which to get it's frustrating!
The reasoning behind the rooting question is there are 2 apps i have bought on the iPhone which aren't available for the android. One is a Sat Nav app that set me back £50, the other is a game.
I use them quite a bit & when i'm on my breaks at work i play the game a lot. My decision wont be based purely on whether i can get this game or not, but it's certainly a factor as break times will be a bit more boring without
I've looked into Sat Nav apps for the SGS3 & they either seem to be poor or eat into your data way too much - & the one i have doesn't do that.0 -
Android had one of the best built in sat navs available. You can also download areas of the map to the phone for offline viewing so it's not as data hungry as you think.
For the rooting I'm not sure how related it is to what you are trying to achieve if the apps/games aren't available on android rooting won't make any difference as its not possible to add them to your phone by rooting.0 -
Ah i thought it was after a bit of googling.
Seems the game i am looking at can be sorted for the SGS2, but not the SGS3 at the moment. Shame.
Looks like TomTom is being released for Android Oct 2012, which would be another £50 spent no doubt.0 -
Inherited DH's Galaxy S i9000 all I needed was a reset to get it back to factory start and it was happy with the new owner. Cannot see there would be any difference when I inherit his Galaxy S III.Truth always poses doubts & questions. I don't think you need to spend £50 on this. I have a TomTom satnav for the car. However I find the navigation on my S3 (& my S before that) google maps works just aswell as the standalone Tom Tom sat nav. In fact it was the maps that made me go with the S3 over the iPhone 5.If my posts have random wrong words, please blame the damn autocorrect not me

Have you tried the free alternatives. I use NavFree for offline maps, or Waze for online with real time traffic data from crowdsourcing.
Nav Free is big as it holds all the data on your phone so you don't need a data connection. Neither may be as polished as TomTom but then again neither are £50 to buy, you may want to try them first if they work for you/0 -
To be perfectly honest, i've only done a bit of browsing - reviews & the like.
Having a stand-alone tomtom isn't an option really. Most of the time i've had to use the TomTom on my iPhone it's been last minute sort of thing. For a standalone unit to work, i'd have to keep it in my car, which i'd rather not do, but then leaving it at home would be no good either.
When i was looking into what i could get on Android - the general view seemed to be Google's navigation program, but then i found this used your data. Any package i buy into will have 500mb of data, no more or less.0
