Warning about rawhide chews at B&M Bargains

I saw this on Facebook and thought I would share just in case, as I know there are a lot of pet loving bargain hunters like me here. Be vigilant when buying pet treats and accessories at bargain prices...

  • OMG - I don't buy them in the shoe type treat (as above) but have recently bought some rawhide sticks quite cheaply (not B&M but another discount shop) - they say they're 100% natural etc so never even crossed my mind there may be any issue with them.

Will have a good inspection of them & might actually just bin them to be on the extra safe side.

Did it say where on the packaging where they came from?

One dose of lead that small does not cause liver failure. It needs to build up in the body. There is probably more danger from dissolved lead from old lead water pipes or lead products in the atmosphere than swallowing a solid lump of lead and having it pass through the body in 24 hours.

Thankfully you're probably right that balls would pass right through with minimal absorption but if one didn't that's still quite a significant amount of lead left in a body. It is a chew though and lead is very soft it could easily be mashed up making it much easier to absorb into the blood stream. Dogs are after all a lot smaller mass wise than humans so they will have smaller livers which would be effected quicker OTOH they have naturally shorter lives anyway so it probably balances out.

What would worry me is if there are lead balls in these what else is in there? I might expect bargain pet food to not be as healthy or made from anything other than the leftovers of the meat industry but I wouldn't think heavy metals would be in there and there should be serious consequences for the retailers.

To be honest, I never buy rawhide chews for my dog at all. When I've bought them in the past, the dogs have chewed them till they are soft, then swallowed them in a lump, sicking them up again after.
Even if he gets given them for Christmas, I put them in an animal charity box.

That's awful though, makes you wonder how on earth they got there and if they are in one chew, I bet they were in the whole batch.

I don't give mine rawhide either

Shocking though that lead pellets are in pet treats!!! Why were they there? How the hell did they get in there? Who's hide is this rawhide, and how did it get slaughtered? TBH I don't really know what rawhide is or where it comes from, but the presence of lead pellets in it is making me wonder..
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

I would say that they were probably shotgun pellets?

That's what it sounds like...maybe in whatever country the chews come from, that's how they kill the animal whose hide makes the chew?

considering they use bolt gun to kill cows, i can only assume someone took a pot shot whilst the cow was very much still alive

On a slightly similar note I've bought these:

And found sharp bits in them (sharper than you'd expect!)

    So be careful
