I have a offline debit/credit card so can use the 24 hour pump there.

As I said before petrol has a zero floor limit, so ALL pay @ pump transactions are authorised. That would be online to you...

The reason certain cards do not work is they authorise for a diffrent, usually small amount, to what will actually debit.

  • At the end of the day if you received an online card from your bank blame yourself not the bank.its the same with bankrupts they're no better they all go debt free after borrowing thousands get them wiped and then complain when the banks don't want them.

Well, all I can say is this:
because I was fortunate enough to have a regular job that paid me well enough, I have been able to live within my means all of my working life; my only loans have been a mortgage and, on 2 occasions, a car loan, all now paid off.
I haven't a clue what my "cards" say about me.........but I can never get any of them to work at pay@pump!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I thought it was me being an idiot (maybe it is)

Imagine the up roar if banks decided to make all their cards online.

Is there actually anything that say banks should allow cards to be used offline?
I think that all cards should be online anyway.

I mean we have upto 100meg broadband in this country along with quite good 3g mobile internet so there is no reason other than money to force all merchants to upgrade all systems to offer this functionality in the first place.

    Think of it though.

All transactions placed online in real-time would mean no scope for Unauthorised Overdraft fees as people would be able to see their money being spent at the moment they have spent it.

Ie pay on debit card and thats it paid there and then as if cash was used. Cant see why this couldnt work in the slightest.

Well given that most banks allow you upto a certain time to ensure your account is within its limits.
All this would do is cause a mass of declines during the day, when people know they are going to transfer funds over later to bring account back inline, before the transactions debit.
eg. Shopping on friday night knowing that most won't debit till monday.

Also just because a transaction is authorised. Does not mean it will debit.
It would also require that your transactions debit in real time like a atm. Which is going to make things like. Your car hire/hotel booking that pre-auths say £500, but never debits is going to stop you spending at your local shops.

So in effect would require a massive rework of the whole authorisation system.

So sadly your idea is never going to be workable.

Yes they do, they take (authorise) £1 out of your available balance and give you a maximum spend of £99. If you try P@P with a online card it wont let you have the fuel as other posters have said here :D

At the end of the day if you received an online card from your bank blame yourself not the bank.

I use to have an online debit card on my bank account as a student.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with my credit rating. If there was I wouldn't have been able to get a credit card from Barclays at the same time, plus open a catalogue credit account and move the account to my student addresses. (The catalogue company must have disliked me as I always brought things in full.)

Once I stopped being a student Barclays upgraded my card to a platinum card, and Nationwide were very happy to give me a credit card and open a Flex account with a debit card even though I rarely used the account at the time. Meanwhile the bank didn't do anything for 2 years.

I also know people from abroad who have been given online debit cards by certain UK banks i.e. Natwest, RBS even though they were earning above the UK average salary. However other UK banks i.e. HSBC, Barclays were happy to give the same people full credit facilities.

Point is it's not always people who mismanage money who get online debit cards. Banks do it because they decide you have a profile they decide as high risk.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)

My Dad used to have an account with HSBC. His credit rating was perfect and his pension would go in every week without fail but they refused to give him anything other than a cash card or even a better account. My Mum who had a full current account, loan, and credit card with Yorkshire Bank, tried for a joint account and they said the same thing to her - basic account only even though her credit rating was outstanding - she had lots of other credit, all paid off in full every month. To which she told them to get lost and went to Lloyds TSB where they opened a platinum joint account complete with scandalous overdraft, credit card for my Mum and gave her a loan at a better rate than her YB one. HSBC had the cheek to ask why Mum didnt want to give up her facilities for a cash card, no credit facilities and an account which was no use to her  I think she turned the air blue with her answer :D
When I first met OH, he had a Solo card on his HSBC account. His income was good as was his credit history but he couldnt understand why he kept getting told he couldnt use his card in some places. I went into the bank with him and asked them for Maestro (as it was then) even they were bemused why he didnt have one and he got one straight off, no problems.
I think some banks systems are just incredibly mysterious and for some reason best known to them even people with spotless credit history get these cards. I'm grateful for my RBS blue Visa Debit card and my Barclays basic account Visa Debit as I couldnt get a debit card for years - I dont drive and always buy train tickets in advance so to be honest it doesnt bother me at all. If I pay for OH's fuel we always use a staffed petrol station so whatever card I have makes no difference.
OH has a contactless Barclays Debit card but he wouldnt know how to use it if it came up and slapped him in the face :rotfl: I can understand it being a problem if you need to use Pay @ Pump or buy tickets on the train but to be honest I dont see what the big fuss is...

I've been trying to follow this thread and Im confused about online and offline cards. I assume that online cards are cards you can only use online and offline cards are cards that you can use in store as well?
