Does MSE have an infatuation with Debit Cards.

Maybe we should brand those with a duff credit history for all to see?
Little bit of an overreach there.
It's the colour of a debit card. Get a sh*t credit history and you have to put up with facilities offered to people with sh*t credit facilities, which includes cards for people with such. Not like they have to wear a sandwich board saying "DEADBEAT".urs sinserly,

True
But the industry was given told to either offer a basic product or fund a government bank / Post Bank to provide the same products. So I don't think goodwill comes into it.
At least some customers will upgrade and buy other bank products.opinions4u wrote: »Oh very much "sub-group".
They'd naff off politicians and regulators big time. But the provision of banking services to people with poor credit history is very much a matter of goodwill. Not legislation and not written regulation.
My point, when it boils downs to it, is simple.
There are much more important things in life than the colour of your debit card. Really. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
What about people with NO credit history E.G. 18 YOs. They have the same need to pay@pump or use machines to get tickets but can not with a blue card.JuicyJesus wrote: »Little bit of an overreach there.

Get a different account? None of my account are basic accounts, and I had my first bank account at the age of around 16 or so at Barclays, where I now have about 4 bank accounts
My lowest value account is the N&P gold light, but hopefully that can be upgraded in a few months
Every other account is a standard account, or a specialist account ie: Nationwide Flex
I had myfirst credit card at the age of 19, and the rules say that you're meant to have an income of 15K - I don't(but I do transfer a lot of money in/out)
It's not too hard for an 18 year old to get a standard account and/or credit card if they can manage their finances well0 -
I think people should be rewarded for hard work and managing finances correctly.
Any can go down the shops a blow credit card money but you got to pay it back!0 -
I don't see M&S Bank doing a basic account any time soon. I don't think First Direct do, and I'm wondering about Metro. It'll be interesting to see which way Virgin Money is going. In general this falls under "financial inclusion". I don't think banks are able to "simply stop" all measures of "financial inclusion".
Actually I'd quite like one to jump ship on that. Then we will see what happens."It will take, five, 10, 15 years to get back to where we need to be. But it's no longer the individual banks that are in the wrong, it's the banking industry as a whole." - Steven Cooper, head of personal and business banking at Barclays, talking to Martin Lewis0 -

I bet there are very few 18 YO who have not had a account of some point in their lives.
So getting a bank account should not be a issue.
Cant use P@P. well its only a few feet further to pay in store.... Which the vast majority of people do anyway.
Same with ticket machines. Not a life threatening experiance to have to go to the counter to get one.
I really don't get this thread at all.
Given that debit cards are the most issued and something the vast majority of people rely on for the daily lives... Of couse they will be the most posted about.Never ASSUME anything its makes a>>> A55 of U & ME <<<0 -

Personally I get my petrol from ASDA on the Coventry Road in Birmingham on the way to work, usually the cheapest in the area last time I filled up it was at 136.7p/L Petrol.
Their cash tills do not open until 7am. I am usually in work by then. I have no other option but to use the Pay at the pump or wait until I leave when the queue is bigger, fortunately I have a offline debit/credit card so can use the 24 hour pump there.0 -

Apparently not. You should spend less time at the ticket counter and get out more and enjoy the rural rail network. There you might find stations without counters and station without ticket machines.
One observation I would make is that e.g. First TransPennine train posters do not distinguish between different "classes" of Visa branded debit card, by implication online cards bearing the Visa symbol are accepted (because it doesn't say they are not) and anyway it is a fait accompli. I also speculate that where there is no counter at a station then an online card should be acceptable (at the rail company's risk). Anybody got any feedback on that?
Further, if you spend more time away from counters and out in your car you may just notice that some petrol stations (usually with the cheapest petrol) no longer have cashiers.0 -
