Oh yeah, my car broke down and needs a £200 repair fee. Can I get wages in advance? Or else I can't go to work. After I receive the payment it'll also take 3 working days before I can collect my car back from repair. My car is going through MOT. I can't collect it until next week! OMG I can't come to work!

OP needs to consider relocating closer to work.

There are plenty of money saving solutions to survive and get to work until OP receives the wages back. OP just needs to stop having such an ego on I must spend money on this and that. Refusing to get to work solves nothing. Going to work and sitting beside HR, refusing to work until wages are sorted also solves nothing. You'll just open yourself to dismissal in the future.
  • If my wages got halved I think that after paying my rent and council tax I'd be in trouble too!

OP I do sympathise. Hope you get it sorted.

If the employer has made a deduction that means the amount left is less than NMW is that not illegal anyway??

Even if your employer screws up so you aren't paid properly then you still go into work. They can foot the bill for bounced direct debits and other issues they have caused. Many banks will offer short term over drafts if you explain the situation. Having an emergency buffer is essential for any working person. If you cannot save it up then you need it as an overdraft facility or dire emergency credit card.

That would be true and relevant if this were a deliberate deduction. However, the OP says this is simply a "clerical error". Obviously it should be corrected promptly and, as said before, technically the employer is liable for any unavoidable losses this has caused.

The situation would be fine if the OP had some emergency cash. If you are living hand to mouth you are not budgeting well enough. Cuts need to be made, where possible, to ensure you have a small amount of savings for unexpected care repairs ect.

I have lived on a salary of £10.5 K before, I still saved each month and made sure that my outgoings did not equal my income totally. That way I could afford to repair my car within a day to get to work (I have a 62 mile round trip a day).

As you may or may not have read in my previous posts, I have saved and did have savings up until maonth ago when I used them to further my job prospects by paying for gas courses. Budgeting isnt an issue when paid correctly.

Anyway, as an update, the company has finally admitted fault after nearly 3 days of trying to get in touch with the right person that could actually deal with the issue.

They have accepted full liability and will be paying all the back pay, plus the days off that I was forced to have.

Thanks for all your responses, good and bad, different perspectives always give a more rounded approach.
  • I agree - well done - good result.

It's good to see an employer treat their employee with decency.

    Thanks for the update.

I think the OP is a lot kinder than some of you deserve !

What a crock a sanctimonious crepe some of you talk !

If an agency is telling you that you didn't get an interview because you live more than 5 miles away -odds are they are letting you down lightly rather than tell you are an unsuitable candidate.

As for the hotdogs and noodle diet -words fail me No-one other than an idiot would consider that even a relatively balanced diet-especially for a child.

Life happens sometimes -and there's not always a buffer available -As the OP pointed out his buffer had gone out the month before to pay for training-Could he have predicted that his company would choose the very next month to foul up -I'm sure the smug would say he shouldn't have done the course before he had built up a new buffer or something equally glib however.

My suggestion to certain posters on here is if you haven't walked in a poster's shoes and are devoid of any imagination to attempt to visulise the situation perhaps a relocation of your head from its current position would be advisable before posting again !!

    Really.......

Whilst I would agree that some of the suggestions are rather fanciful or extreme they do at least acknowledge that there is a problem and attempt to find a solution.

No amount of sympathy or suggestions that you are somehow unqualified to comment unless you are in a dire financial situation yourself are going to help.

Nobody reading this, apart possibly from the OP himself, knows whether he has in fact made the best possible use of his income or taken all reasonable steps to minimise his expenditure. Perhaps he has but, if so, he would be in a small minority.

Far too many people choose to live their lives in a way that spends every penny they have coming in (and more) and regard as necessities things that are actually optional. The sense or righteous entitlement never ceases to amaze me.

So, like "dizzyrascal" the best you can come up with is to say "there there" and rudely dismiss anybody who tries to be more proactive!
