£120 a month? Is that for a whole family or just yourself? For me I can easily live on £30-40 a month... and cut it down to £20 a month if required.0

£20 a month for food? Sorry but I don't believe you. Not unless you just never eat. There are three types of people in this world. Those who can count and those who can't.0 -
7p per can of Aldi beans & a loaf of bread. You could easily live of £20 a month for food but why would you want to?
I spend about £60 a week on my food shopping for 1 person.0 -

That could quite easily feed a family of 5 or 6.Thinking critically since 1996....0 -
This is why employers are increasingly becoming relunctant to hire people living outside of walking distance (5 miles) from work.
Really? Where I live almost no one lives within walking distance of work. I myself travel 32 miles each way; OH travels 11 miles.
This situation is unlikely to be a problem for most people, who would either have some emergency money or people to borrow off of for the few days it takes for payroll to sort stuff out. Not everyone is looking for a way not to go to work and will sort out a way to get there.Save £200 a month : [STRIKE]Oct[/STRIKE] Nov Dec Jan Feb Mar Apr0 -

THe obvious one would be car insurance, since the OP has already stated they drive 60 miles to work and back - and they may be lumping road tax, petrol, maintenance & MOT costs into that figure as well, as they don't seem to have them listed separately.0 -
I might be missing something here but even though the OP's salary is £700 short (and yes I would be mad as well) surely there was enough in the kitty to have afforded petrol for yesterday?
These types of problems are far better sorted out in person than by email/phone - at least the OP could have had a word with the boss who may have been able to give him some cash out of petty cash until it was sorted out.
In fairness I doubt HR were working yesterday so would more likely expect a reply on monday2014 Target;

Do you not have a partner? Do they not contribute to the upkeep of your family? Did you not consider the financial implications of having a family before having kids??
Do you have sky tv, broadband, mobile phones etc? I am sure there are lots of things that you consider essential that are really just wants rather than needs.
I've never been on a low income which I know I am lucky for but I know plenty of people working on NMW that have far nicer things (iphones, cars, 50" plasmas etc) than I do and wonder why they have no money left.
Car insurance, life insurance (for the benefit of my child) and contents insurance.
And Yes I did consider the implications of a child when I was in a relationship, owned a house and was earning £40k a year. Situations change and we make the best of it. I was asking for advice not a sanctimonious response from someone that has no information whatsoever. Yes I have a partner who is not the childs mother and also doesnt live with me.this is my problem not hers. I was asking for information.
No I dont have sky, cable or broadband. I have a mobile because that is essential as i have no land line. Its PAYG and limit myself to £15 per month as this gives me a WiFi connection too.
I have no idea what NWM is but I have nothing out of the ordinary. I have a 19" TV in the living room with freeview, a car to allow myself transport to and from work, sofa to sit on and a bed to sleep in. I hardly think this is excessive.
Thanks for you ill informed response though, made my afternoon.
Looking forward to your response though, should be interesting!!??0 -

If you can eat properly and healthily on that amount then I would love to see an itemised shopping list for your "20 - 30" a month list!!! Please provide these details as i'm sure you will help a lot of people until then please keep your dream world opinions to yourself. I look forward to you proving me wrong and me apoligising.0 -

Hi the original post was on Friday and, after being on the phone to them all morning, I still received no response from them. Not even a call to say that the situation had been acknowledged. I didnt email as I dont class this as an acceptable and timely form of communication as there is no confirmation of receipt or action.
As for the fuel situation, I was on fumes and was waiting for payday. I got paid but have all my bills set up to go out on the 28th as per my pay day which then allows me my "free money". What went in barely covered my rent let alone all the others. Bank has been really good about it though and has waived all charges for unpaid DD's.0
