re using the tumble dryer - mine uses 33p of electric at most for each dry load - less if it's not got towels in, so an average of 3 loads a week (and I line dry if at all possible) would be a max of £52 per year. To me (and I appreciate that it's a luxury) - that is absolutely worth it. My son is asthmatic, I have to watch humidity levels and condensation/ventilation etc, so while i am lucky enough to have the choice I will economise elsewhere.

most of winter prep done, just got to get car through MOT next week fingers crossed xxx

Pops I'd also check the labels before putting thermals in td. If they are synthetic they might spoil. Our thermals dry v quick on airers anyway...

Thank you for that...the one's I am using are 50% Polyester and 50% Cotton now I discover I am not suppose to tumble dry(too late)and they are supposed to be washed at 40(I just put them in with other clothes on a programme that is easiest to use for most items...

So perhaps I will see if I can find something different in the thermal range...or put them on the washing line if we get some not too bad weather...I haven't noticed any problems so far about the quality.

There's been quite a lot in the news recently about having loads of washing hanging around being bad for you.

I remember years ago that we used to take it to the laundrette and wash / dry rather than hanging it up and then used the TD at home but now it's always just hung up to avoid the extra costs of TD etc .......

Thank you, I meant to catch this on the radio and fell asleep missing it. There are no local launderette's near here but I remember how wonderful we all thought it was and how popular it was when one opened on the town...

My mum has 15 and 12.5 and loves it, she insists on sleeping with her door open so she can hear the smoke alarm should it go off (she has one in every room, the who road would hear!) but could you put a 2 way intercom in her room so you could hear her maybe?

I got a 15 tog, so have a 30 tog altogether, omg i was waking up sweating like mad! Lovely going to sleep mind. Now I've just got it down at feet level and I dont need hot water bottle.

I had an intercom but something broke on it. I feel as if I am protecting dd better though having my door open for some reason! That sounds daft I know, just hearing the stairs... maybe its something inbuilt!

Today has been so cold and misty, damp air, very atmospheric and spooky!
Still havnt done front garden but all being well I must try and get it done tomorrow!

  • Talking of thermals, I bought dd a pack of
2 thermal vests form Asda for £5, which I thought
was a tad dear... but they are so worth the money.
So soft on the inside too.
She's been warm as anything in them.

Nope. My room is definitely warmer. The dehumidifier blows out warm air from the top. It's a Meaco dessicant type.

Mine sucks in the moisture, but is definitely blowing out cold air - I may have a look and see if I can find the receipt and return it to the shop, without the original box.

    Thanks for your reply.

We also have a dehumidifier which I bought last year and I would say that the house is warmer as well

Mine must be faulty - you guys seem to have more success than I have with mine.

  • Hello peeps :hello:

Re dehumidifiers, I have the cheapest non-mini one I could find, which at the time was an Argos own-brand. It's good, efficient, hasn't broken down yet and works well. I would say the main things to look for if you want to make an informed decision are the extraction rate, the size of the container if you plan to leave it running all day while you are out, and the method it works by (dessicant ones blow warm as they work which is appealing; coil ones blow cool air but are cheaper initially and more energy efficient therefore cheaper to run).

Thanks for this information - I guess I have the coil one - will have a closer look next time I go shopping.

    Cheers

A couple of winters ago my door froze, and the handle popped and broke as I didn't realise. I had it replaced and the mechanic showed me how to get wd40 right into the lock, and yes, he said use Vaseline on the rubber seals to keep water out, and prevent freezing. I've just redone mine and tey haven't stuck since.

Yup, WD40 is great for this ....

Thanks that Lobby - I'm terrible at working out costs of stuff :o

Although a luxury, I have decided that I will be going back to drying certainly towels & bedding in the TD ..... my TD is ancient and even if it costs 50p to do a load @ 2 loads / week, for me it's a cost I feel is worth it as I'm asthmatic and have other health issues as well so really need to keep the house as damp free as poss.
